Thoracic Surgery ERAS Column: Evidence-Based Wings for Faster Recovery
Thoracic Surgery ERAS Column: Evidence-Based Wings for Faster Recovery
It is well known that thoracic surgery often involves critical organs such as the lungs, esophagus, and mediastinum, characterized by complex procedures, significant trauma, and prolonged postoperative recovery. Patients frequently endure severe pain, respiratory complications, extended bed rest, and other challenges. Compounded by their limited understanding of the condition, these factors inevitably hinder optimal recovery outcomes. Therefore, optimizing perioperative nursing care for thoracic surgery patients has become a key focus in our department's pursuit of enhanced quality nursing services.

The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) concept centers on evidence-based nursing practices, aiming to minimize trauma and stress responses through optimized perioperative care protocols, thereby accelerating patient recovery. In line with this philosophy, our Thoracic Surgery Nursing Station is proud to launch its dedicated ERAS Nursing Column!

This column is grounded in evidence-based medicine and systematically presents the core principles of ERAS, focusing on four key perioperative aspects:
- Precision Pain Management: Clarifies common misconceptions about pain, guides patients in accurately expressing pain levels, and advocates for multimodal, individualized analgesic plans to alleviate postoperative pain and facilitate early ambulation.
- Standardized Respiratory Management: Highlights the importance of respiratory function exercises, details specific training methods, and provides effective coughing and sputum clearance techniques to ensure pulmonary safety and reduce complication risks.
- Optimized Tube Management: Specifies standardized protocols for thoracic drainage tubes, outlines clear criteria and precautions for early removal to minimize patient discomfort and enhance recovery comfort.
- Enhanced Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention: Investigates thrombus formation mechanisms, emphasizes the "prevention over treatment" principle, targets high-risk populations with visualized preventive measures to strengthen venous safety.

Our department's ERAS Nursing Column transforms accelerated recovery concepts into practical, patient-friendly guidelines. With its professional, actionable content and clear, accessible instructions, the column establishes a standardized yet humanized recovery pathway integrated throughout the entire nursing process, earning widespread praise from patients and their families. Moving forward, our thoracic surgery nursing team remains committed to our patient-centered philosophy. We will continue to deepen our implementation of ERAS principles, striving to enhance nursing quality and improve patient care experiences. Our goal is to make the accelerated recovery journey more precise and compassionate for every patient.
