  • Conventional radiotherapy has become a routine treatment.
  • China's first Heavy Ion Cancer Treatment System (located in Wuwei) and the second (in Lanzhou). Heavy Ion Treatment began in November 2024.
  • Key personnel related to heavy ion treatment were transferred from Wuwei Heavy Ion Center.

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital Campus is the second clinical center for heavy ion therapy with China's domestically developed technology with independent intellectual property rights operated by Wuwei Cancer Hospital in Gansu Province. It is located at No. 100, Yanbei Road, Chengguan District, Lanzhou City. It began to receive patients on August 15, 2024, started radiation therapy using a medical linear accelerator treatment on September 25, and began heavy ion treatment before the end of October.

The hospital is equipped with China's second Heavy Ion Cancer Treatment System, two Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerators, two Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerators, a state-of-the-art iterative PET-CT scanner, a 3.0T MRI simulator for precision positioning, and other advanced medical devices.Professor Wang Junjie, Chair of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the hospital’s president. The hospital has established 50 expert workstations, including those led by Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, a member of the Standing Committee of the Radiation Oncology Branch within the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chair of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA), serves as President of the hospital. The hospital has established 50 expert workstations, including those led by Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, a member of the Standing Committee of the CMA’s Radiation Oncology Branch. The hospital aims to build a comprehensive, full-life-cycle tumor treatment system, offering disciplines such as surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, critical care medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine. It provides treatments such as photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, and comprehensive medical and surgical therapies.

The medical heavy ion accelerator, a national megaproject developed through six decades of scientific research by the Lanzhou Institute of Modern Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, represents China's breakthrough in solving critical bottleneck technologies for tumor treatment using heavy ion beams. As the first domestically developed medical heavy ion accelerator system from the institute, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Radiation Therapy System completed 12 years of construction and commenced operations on August 15, 2024, at the Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital's Lanzhou branch. After obtaining essential certifications, including the Class A/B Large Medical Equipment Configuration License and Category I/II/III Radiation Safety Permit, the system officially launched heavy ion therapy services on November 15, 2024. Operational statistics through April 9, 2025, show 3,814 outpatient consultations (including free clinics), 420 hospitalized patients, 66 heavy ion therapy cases, and 71 conventional photon therapy cases. This cutting-edge system demonstrates China's unique therapeutic advantages in precision radiation oncology, maintaining clinical leadership that is unmatched nationwide in treatment efficacy and technical sophistication.
