The Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, supported by the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, commenced clinical operations in March 2020. Covering over 406 acres  with a total investment of CNY 3.2 billion, the center includes a 1,600-bed cancer hospital. Its carbon ion radiotherapy system, approved by the National Medical Products Administration (2019) and National Health Commission (2019), leverages advanced biological effects superior to X-rays and proton beams, enabling precise cancer targeting while sparing healthy tissues.

The Wuwei Heavy Ion Treatment System received approval from the National Medical Products Administration on September 29, 2019. The carbon ion radiotherapy system configuration license was approved by the National Health Commission on November 29, 2019.

Professional technical personnel have undergone training at institutions in Germany, the United States, Japan, and the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Hospital, acquiring the latest knowledge related to heavy ions.

The Wuwei Cancer Hospital of Gansu Province has established medical alliances with multiple domestic cancer hospitals. Carbon ion beams are characterized by their heavier particle mass compared to X-rays and proton beams, providing a more reasonable dose distribution within the human body compared to X-ray and proton beams. This allows for effective cancer treatment without harming other important normal tissues. Additionally, the biological effects are superior to those of X-rays and proton beams, making them effective against tumors that are resistant to X-ray and proton beam treatments.

The Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is committed to becoming a first-class domestic institution with internationally advanced standards, integrating heavy ion basic research, talent cultivation, and clinical treatment into a comprehensive industrial, educational, and research center for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In the future, heavy ion beam therapy is poised to play a more significant role, offering the best possible radiation therapy for cancer patients.
