To continuously strengthen the medical quality and safety defence, deepen the development of medical ethics, open up channels for social oversight, and build harmonious doctor-patient relationships, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Campus held a Social Supervisor Meeting on Medical Quality and Ethics on April 10. Representatives from various sectors of society, including government agencies, enterprises and institutions, universities, news media, community organizations, and patients' families, were invited to attend. Together, they discussed development, deliberated on oversight measures, and jointly safeguarded health.

The meeting was chaired by Qi Ying, Vice President of the Lanzhou Campus. She introduced that since the hospital came under the trusteeship of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital on November 15, 2024, the heavy ion therapy system at the Lanzhou Campus has been officially put into clinical application. This marks the launch of China's second heavy ion therapy system with independent intellectual property rights in Gansu, representing a strategic upgrade from a "single-point breakthrough" to "region-wide coverage" in tumor treatment technology. With the simultaneous operation of the two major heavy ion centers in Wuwei and Lanzhou, Gansu has set a new benchmark in the global radiotherapy field. The hospital's unique "heavy ion + traditional Chinese medicine" distinctive diagnosis and treatment approach is providing comprehensive, full-life-cycle health management services for cancer patients worldwide.

During the meeting, Su Anping, Vice President of the Lanzhou Campus, read out the "Arrangement Opinions on Regularly Carrying Out Social Oversight of Medical Quality and Medical Ethics." This document clearly defines the responsibilities, scope, rights, and routine working mechanisms for social supervisors, providing a solid institutional guarantee for the standardized and long-term implementation of oversight work.

At the appointment ceremony, Wang Junjie, President of the Lanzhou Campus, presented letters of appointment to representatives of supervisors from various sectors. Representatives from government agencies, enterprises and institutions, universities, media outlets, community organizations, and patients' families were officially appointed and will jointly fulfill their oversight duties, helping the hospital improve service quality and efficiency.

In his speech, President Wang Junjie expressed gratitude for the trust and support of all supervisors. He expressed his hope that the supervisors would fully exercise their three major functions—supervisors, promoters, and think tanks—acting as a "clairvoyant eye" for hospital development and a "bridge of connection" between doctors and patients. He encouraged them to objectively reflect public concerns, accurately identify service shortcomings, and help drive the hospital toward its goal of becoming the "National Regional Medical Center with the most comprehensive tumor radiotherapy capabilities in Western China."

After the meeting, President Wang Junjie delivered a special science lecture titled The 'Rocket Force' Against Tumors — Radiotherapy, systematically explaining the technical advantages and clinical application outcomes of heavy ion therapy, thereby laying a professional foundation for effective oversight work.

As the core of the hospital's "one body, two wings" development strategy, the Lanzhou Campus has always remained committed to serving the people's medical needs. The application of heavy ion technology has ended the era of cancer patients in Gansu Province having to travel far outside the province for treatment, significantly improving outcomes for difficult-to-treat tumors such as glioblastoma and pancreatic cancer. Leveraging its independently developed core technology, the Lanzhou Campus has become the only medical institution in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, demonstrating China's strength in independent innovation of high-end medical equipment.

After the meeting, the supervisors toured the core clinical areas and the heavy ion therapy center at the Lanzhou Campus. The Lanzhou Campus fully shares the eight "world or national first" technological achievements of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. Its precise "targeted blast" treatment advantages and high-quality clinical environment received unanimous recognition from the supervisors.

The convening of this meeting has built a bridge of communication between the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital and the broader community. Moving forward, the hospital will take this meeting as an opportunity to fully integrate social oversight into the entire process of hospital management, remain problem-oriented, continuously optimize services, and strengthen medical quality and ethical standards. At the same time, the hospital will continue to deepen its scientific innovation platform development, actively lay out advanced technologies such as light ion therapy and boron neutron capture therapy, and strive to build a high-quality cancer treatment institution that earns public satisfaction and social recognition—contributing to the high-quality development of healthcare in both the Healthy China initiative and Gansu Province.
