—— World-Renowned German Oncology Expert Prof. György Kovács Visits Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for Academic Exchange
On April 9, globally acclaimed oncology authority—renowned German oncology expert Professor György Kovács—visited the Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for academic exchange and multidisciplinary collaboration. This cross-border academic initiative serves as a vital bridge connecting medical professionals and patients in Gansu and surrounding regions with world-leading cancer diagnosis and treatment concepts, injecting fresh, powerful momentum into the hospital’s development in the field of oncology.

With over 30 years of dedicated work in oncology, Professor György Kovács focuses on research in "precision targeting and immune synergy" and is a leading international authority in oncology, whose academic and clinical expertise ranks among the top in Europe. He holds positions as an academician of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and a tenured professor at Heidelberg University in Germany, having previously served as Director of the Heidelberg University Cancer Institute and Head of the German National Center for Precision Cancer Therapy. As a core board member of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and a standing committee member of the German Society for Radiation Oncology (DEGRO), he has been deeply involved in shaping European standards for personalized cancer care. Professor Kovács has led more than 10 major EU oncology research projects, published over 100 SCI-indexed papers, and contributed multiple research findings that have been incorporated into European oncology guidelines. Certified as both a medical doctor and a European specialist in oncology, he excels in precision medical oncology, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and comprehensive management of complex malignancies, with particular expertise in devising personalized treatment strategies for advanced cancers.
During his visit, Professor Kovács engaged deeply in core clinical activities. He immersed himself in the frontline work of the hospital’s radiotherapy department, providing comprehensive guidance on diagnosis and treatment. In case discussions, he combined the hospital’s practical context with typical cases, offering detailed analysis and precise recommendations on key aspects such as radiotherapy target delineation, dose planning, and multidisciplinary collaboration strategies. His insights helped enhance the precision and standardization of the hospital’s radiotherapy practices.

Professor Kovács’s visit for regular clinical guidance and academic consultation reflects the Lanzhou Branch’s commitment to its patient-centered mission. It represents a tangible step in actively integrating international top-tier medical resources, elevating regional oncology care standards, and addressing the practical challenges patients face in accessing world-class expertise and advanced treatments.
As a leading clinical base for heavy-ion cancer therapy in China, the hospital leverages a domestically developed heavy-ion treatment system, which officially entered clinical application on November 15, 2024. To date, the hospital has successfully performed heavy-ion and photon precision radiotherapy for over 450 cancer patients, covering a range of complex malignancies including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma. The unique technical advantages and outstanding clinical efficacy of heavy-ion precision radiotherapy have been fully validated, offering renewed hope to cancer patients.
