Teen with Kidney Cancer Lung Metastasis Gets New Lease on Life: Wuwei Heavy Ion Therapy Achieves Another Miracle

The young protagonist of this story comes from a happy family in Shanghai. At just 15 years old, he is an outstanding student at a key municipal high school and a member of the district basketball team (national second-class athlete), standing at 188cm tall with a sunny and healthy disposition. Before falling ill, he engaged in high-intensity sports training daily without any discomfort. In early March 2022, he suddenly experienced hematuria at school and was diagnosed with renal malignancy after emergency treatment at Shanghai Children's Hospital. Following hospitalization and examinations, he underwent left radical nephrectomy on March 11th. Pathological and genetic tests confirmed Stage III TFE3 gene fusion-associated renal cell carcinoma. After surgery, the child recovered well and gradually resumed his sports training. However, misfortune struck again one and a half years later. During a follow-up examination on August 17, 2023, multiple lung metastases were detected, with the largest lesion measuring nearly 10cm. The entire family was plunged into deep despair. His parents sought medical help at top hospitals across Shanghai and even nationwide, only to face repeated devastating blows—doctors' silence, headshakes, and unanimous prognoses of poor survival prospects, inoperability, and palliative targeted therapy as the only option.

One day, while searching online for information, the boy's mother stumbled upon proton and heavy ion therapy—a glimmer of hope in the darkness that reignited the family's fading optimism. They immediately brought their son to the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center, where Professor Wu Kailiang conducted an evaluation. With deep regret, he informed them that the case did not meet their admission criteria, delivering yet another devastating blow that left the family feeling utterly hopeless. However, Professor Wu offered a lifeline: "Although our center cannot admit your son, that doesn't mean proton or heavy ion therapy is out of reach. Based on his condition, I believe heavy ion therapy is the most suitable option. You should consult Director Zhang Yanshan at Wuwei Heavy Ion Center in Gansu." Without wasting a moment, they stepped out of the consultation room and promptly contacted Wuwei Heavy Ion Hospital. Head Nurse He Lihua, who received them, was deeply sympathetic after hearing their story. That evening, Director Zhang reviewed the boy's cloud-based imaging scans and discussed the lung lesions and prognosis of heavy ion therapy over the phone. Though they had never met, Director Zhang's kind and reassuring words gradually eased the mother's month-long tension. Without hesitation, just two days later—on September 19, 2023—they set off for Wuwei, Gansu.

The transportation in Wuwei was quite inconvenient. After landing in Lanzhou, it took us three hours by airport shuttle bus to finally arrive. Throughout the journey, I couldn't help but wonder—how could such an advanced medical facility exist in this fifth-tier small city? But for my child's sake, I was determined to exhaust every possible hope. Upon reaching the hospital, I was immediately struck by the spacious and well-maintained campus, which left me in awe. My child was assigned to the Radiation Therapy Department III, where Director Zhang Yanshan—not only the head of the department but also the leader of the entire Heavy Ion Center—overseeing his care. The kind nurses went out of their way to accommodate him, even arranging a VIP ward for us. To my surprise, such a large, comfortable room cost only 380 yuan per day—an unimaginable price in Shanghai. Dr. Ma, our attending physician, was exceptionally dedicated and warm-hearted. The very next day, she arranged a PET-CT scan. Fortunately, no metastases were found beyond the lungs, but the lung metastasis was far more severe than I had feared—multiple nodules, with the largest lesion in the left lower lobe exceeding 10 cm, another at the right hilum measuring 4.8 cm, along with a 2.1 cm mediastinal lymph node and pleural effusion. Given my child's young age and the extensive lesions—particularly the large mass in the left lower lobe that was already compressing his heart—Director Zhang convened a comprehensive consultation with his team. During the anxious waiting period, I feared they might deem him ineligible for heavy ion therapy. Meanwhile, my son began experiencing symptoms: chest tightness, shortness of breath, and difficulty speaking in full sentences. Having endured frustrating experiences at other hospitals, I couldn't help but praise the efficiency here. By the 22nd, we were notified that the simulation and immobilization process would begin, finally lifting a huge weight off my chest. On the 25th, Dr. Ma detailed the treatment plan: Lung Radiotherapy (Two Target Areas): Left lower lobe metastasis: 78 Gy(RBE)/13 fractions, Mediastinal and right hilar metastatic lymph nodes: 52 Gy(RBE)/13 fractions. The large tumor size necessitated a high-dose regimen, which understandably raised concerns about side effects. Dr. Ma, deeply empathetic, meticulously explained every potential adverse effect. (Throughout the process, she personally coordinated with the simulation team for each positioning and correction session—her dedication was truly admirable.) Systemic Therapy Adjustments: Switched to the targeted drug Lenvatinib, Added Tislelizumab (immunotherapy). This meticulously tailored treatment plan finally gave us hope.

After completing the heavy ion therapy, we underwent an enhanced CT scan, which showed mild enhancement in the lesions. Director Zhang personally analyzed the images and assured us that the treatment had yielded excellent results. Due to the "tail effect" characteristic of heavy ion therapy, he recommended a follow-up examination in three months. Upon returning to Shanghai on October 22, we continued the prescribed treatment with Lenvatinib and Tislelizumab immunotherapy. Remarkably, our child's condition improved steadily, eventually returning to normal with no adverse side effects. Two months later, we returned to Wuwei for a second NK cell immunotherapy session. On January 15, 2024, we had a follow-up enhanced CT scan at Shanghai Fudan University Cancer Center. The results left our entire family overjoyed—the previously observed 4.8 cm lesion in the right hilum and the 2.1 cm mediastinal lesion had miraculously vanished. The CT report now only mentioned suspicious lymph nodes. The once 10 cm mass in the left lower lobe had completely lost viability, showing no abnormal enhancement signals. Instead, the report described encapsulated fluid with no pleural effusion, along with some patchy shadows. The reviewing physician was astonished by the imaging results, praising the remarkable efficacy of the heavy ion therapy. Regarding the patchy shadows, I immediately consulted Dr. Ma. After evaluation, she confirmed these were within the radiation field of the right hilum radiation and likely represented mild radiation pneumonitis. Remarkably, our child exhibited no symptoms whatsoever, indicating an extremely mild case. Considering the long-term prognosis, she proposed a targeted medication plan. That night, sleep eluded me—I kept fearing it was all just a dream. I shared the results in our patient support group, where messages of congratulations and amazement flooded in. Many fellow patients, having endured similar struggles, were eager to learn about heavy ion therapy, finding renewed hope and confidence in our experience.
