Ten Years of Honing a Sword: China’s Heavy Ions Go Global
Ten Years of Honing a Sword: China’s Heavy Ions Go Global
—A Fifth Anniversary Review of Clinical Applications at Wuwei Heavy Ion Center
For ten years of dedicated effort, Wuwei Heavy Ion Center—the first hospital in China to adopt the domestically developed heavy ion therapy system—has officially been in clinical application for over five years. On June 28, the "Wuwei Heavy Ion Center Fifth Anniversary Symposium & Academic Conference on Cutting-Edge Ion Therapy Technologies" was successfully held in Wuwei. More than 100 experts in heavy ion medical equipment R&D, production, and clinical application attended, including Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Oncology Therapy Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, as well as expert teams from Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, and other countries.
Over the past five years, Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has achieved breakthroughs from scratch, overcoming multiple "bottleneck" technologies and filling international gaps in heavy ion cancer treatment, enabling China to "overtake on the curve" in this advanced field. To date, the center has treated over 2,000 patients from all provinces of China (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) and countries such as Belgium, South Korea, Australia, Thailand, and Canada. The treated conditions span more than 50 types, including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma, establishing a "Chinese benchmark" in global oncology therapy and forging an international hub for heavy ion medical innovation.

Pioneering Eight "World Firsts"—Setting a Chinese Standard
Through a decade of relentless progress, the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has continuously broken new ground in technological innovation, achieving eight "world firsts":
- The only hospital globally operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously.
- The world leader in single-fraction, same-day treatment, completing the highest number of such cases.
- The first globally to develop and implement: Respiratory-gated heavy ion precision therapy, Bladder volume-controlled heavy ion therapy for bladder cancer, Surgically placed spacer-assisted single-session heavy ion therapy for tumors adjacent to critical organs. Each breakthrough reflects the ingenuity and dedication of the Wuwei team, offering new hope for patients with complex conditions.
- China’s first 360° rotating and height-adjustable ion therapy chair, enhancing precision.
- The world’s first to: Successfully treat multiple cardiac tumors with heavy ions, Integrate heavy ion therapy with comprehensive, lifelong health management, Setting new trends in both technology and patient care.

Optimized Pricing—Making Heavy Ion Therapy More Accessible
- Wuwei Heavy Ion Center: Continues to specialize in complex-case precision therapy while offering full-lifecycle health management, including mental wellness, cultural therapy, rural rehabilitation, and specialized physiotherapy—all at no additional cost. Heavy ion treatment pricing remains unchanged.
- Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center: Adjusted pricing model: First session: ¥49,500 Subsequent sessions: ¥16,500 each Maximum per course: ¥198,000 Designed to accommodate diverse patient needs.
- Insurance coverage: Patients enrolled in heavy ion-specific insurance programs from major insurers can claim expenses at both Wuwei and Lanzhou centers.
This innovative model ensures efficient resource allocation, balancing personalized care for complex cases with broader accessibility to world-leading heavy ion technology.
Advancing Clinical Research—Aligning with Global Standards, Establishing Chinese Guidelines
The center has launched eight clinical studies on heavy ion therapy for liver cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, pancreatic cancer, high-grade gliomas, and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Participants receive fully funded treatment, with research costs covered by the hospital.
These studies accelerate the national standardization of heavy ion therapy for complex cancers, translating technical advances into clinical guidelines and offering a "Chinese solution" for global heavy ion medicine.

Publishing a Landmark Series—Leading Industry Standardization
Knowledge sharing drives progress. The center has compiled and released: Heavy Ion Therapy Radiation Safety & Equipment Operation Guideline, Carbon Ion Radiotherapy Standard Operating Procedures, Precision Carbon Ion Therapy Series (Physics, Technology, and Clinical Volumes, TCM Constitution Classification & Health Management, Practical Guide to Cancer Hospital Management, Comprehensive Lifelong Cancer Rehabilitation, Carbon Ion Cancer Therapy: A Complete Perspective.
This first-of-its-kind series covers technical standards, clinical protocols, physician guidelines, and health management, bridging gaps in China’s heavy ion medical literature.

Global Alliances—Fortifying Excellence
The center has established a Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and 50 expert workstations, bringing top-tier care closer to patients. Through international collaborations, it continuously integrates cutting-edge innovations, ensuring sustained growth.

Expanding the Expert Roster—Global Talent Joins
Building upon its existing roster of long-term retained experts—including Professor Tatsuaki Kanai from Gunma University Graduate School of Medicine (Japan), former director Professor Tsujii hirohiko of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, former RPTC director Professor Jörg Hauffe and Professor Olga from Munich Proton Therapy Center (Germany), former chairman Professor Yee-Min Jen of Taiwan's Radiation Oncology Society, renowned radiotherapy physicist Professor Jia-Ming Wu from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and the team led by Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology—the center has recently expanded its international faculty with three distinguished additions:
- Professor Yasuo Yoshioka (Department of Radiation Oncology, National Cancer Center Hospital, Japan)
- Professor György Kovács (Director of Brachytherapy Center, University of Lübeck, Germany; Education Program Director, Sacred Heart University, Italy)
- Professor Tung-Ho Wu (TMU Proton Therapy Center, Taipei Medical University Hospital)
These world-class experts have collectively established a comprehensive think tank covering the entire heavy ion therapy spectrum, integrating Eastern and Western medical wisdom to create an unprecedentedly robust talent matrix.
