Debuting in Beijing! China's Heavy Ion Technology Reaches the World

"Showing the Hexi Corridor to the World" – Beijing Special Promotion Event Successfully Held

Editor’s Note: On the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the clinical application of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, cancer patients from Belgium, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Canada, Jordan, Serbia, Russia, and other countries have traveled across oceans and mountains to receive heavy ion therapy. At the same time, health authorities, oncology specialty institutions, and renowned industry experts from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Georgia, South Korea, and other countries have visited the Wuwei and Lanzhou Heavy Ion Centers of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for on‑site research, exchange, and knowledge sharing, drawing on "Chinese experience" to support the development of their own heavy ion medical systems.

In the golden autumn of Beijing, where the Silk Road breeze meets the innovative spirit of Gansu, the "Showing the Hexi Corridor to the World" Beijing Special Promotion Event was successfully held on August 27. As the birthplace of China's domestically produced heavy ion cancer therapy technology, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital showcased the remarkable achievements of China's heavy ion technology, presenting a comprehensive display of its breakthroughs in precision cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as its industrial implementation. The event attracted widespread attention and in‑depth engagement from diplomatic envoys, industry professionals, experts, scholars, and mainstream media.

This promotion event was designed to showcase the high‑quality resources of the Hexi Corridor, deepen opening‑up, and empower the development of distinctive industries. It presented a multi‑dimensional view of the Hexi Corridor's cultural heritage, ecological strengths, and scientific innovation capabilities, helping Gansu‑based brands expand beyond the province, connect with the whole country, and reach a global audience. Our hospital focused on high‑end medical science and technology innovation, establishing a dedicated exhibition area for heavy ion technology. Through physical models, achievement presentations, and on‑site science education, we systematically demonstrated the principles of domestically produced heavy ion equipment, core technical advantages, clinical application outcomes, and international development strategies — highlighting the mission of this great national instrument to take root in the Hexi Corridor, protect public health, and serve the world.

As the birthplace of China's domestically produced heavy ion technology, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is the only medical institution in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, with an integrated dual‑center development framework linking Wuwei and Lanzhou. The hospital has independently developed nine world‑first or China‑first technologies, including precision ventilator‑controlled therapy and organ‑tumor spacer‑based treatment, addressing the limitations of conventional radiotherapy. The treatable tumor types now cover over 100 malignancies. To date, the two centers have provided precision treatment to more than 3,000 domestic and international patients, with multiple clinical outcomes ranking among the world's best.

This Beijing promotion event represents an important opportunity for our hospital to open up and engage with the international community. Moving forward, we will take this as a new starting point to continue advancing core heavy ion technologies, accelerate the translation of research outcomes, and improve our international medical service system. We will broaden academic and medical cooperation channels both domestically and internationally. Leveraging the open strategic position of the Hexi Corridor, we aim to build a world‑class precision cancer diagnosis and treatment hub, promote the global reach of China's heavy ion technology, and inject strong momentum into the development of a Healthy Gansu, the upgrading of Northwest China's medical industry, and international medical cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
