Medical Experts from Multiple Countries Visit Wuwei Heavy Ion Center for Exchange

On the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the clinical application of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, cancer patients from Belgium, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Canada, Jordan, Serbia, Russia, and other countries have traveled across oceans and mountains to receive heavy ion therapy. At the same time, health authorities, oncology specialty institutions, and renowned industry experts from Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Georgia, South Korea, and other countries have visited the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center for on‑site research, exchange, and knowledge sharing, drawing on "Chinese experience" to support the development of their own heavy ion medical systems.

  • 2025: Dr. Nguyen Van Dang, Head of the Head and Neck Radiation Oncology Department at Hanoi National Cancer Hospital and Faculty of Oncology at Hanoi Medical University, led a delegation to visit Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Wuwei Heavy Ion Center) and the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. The two parties signed a strategic cooperation agreement.
  • January 8, 2026: A delegation from the National Cancer Institute of Thailand visited the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for on‑site research and academic exchange.
  • January 29, 2026: Professor Yeong Chai Hong and his delegation from the Faculty of Medicine at Taylor's University (Malaysia) visited the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for research and academic exchange.
  • July 7, 2026: David Saganelidze, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Georgian Development Foundation and former Georgian Chair of the Georgia‑China Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Trade Cooperation, along with Tamar Namoradze, Assistant to the Chairman of the Georgian Development Foundation, visited the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for research and inspection.
  • August 8, 2026: A delegation from the National Cancer Center Korea visited the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for research and exchange.

The delegations from multiple countries gained an in‑depth understanding of the center's construction, operation, and clinical application through on‑site visits, presentations, and panel discussions. They spoke highly of the center's treatment equipment, research achievements, and development prospects, and expressed strong interest in the principles and operational procedures of heavy ion therapy. The delegations also expressed hope for future in‑depth collaboration with the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center in relevant fields, working together to advance medical science and technology.

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is the first clinical application base in China for heavy ion therapy with independent intellectual property rights. Officially launched in March 2020, the hospital took over the management of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center in November 2024, establishing an integrated dual‑center framework with Wuwei and Lanzhou as two hubs. Leveraging nine world‑first or China‑first heavy ion cancer treatment technologies — including precision heavy ion therapy under ventilator control, bladder‑capacity‑controlled treatment for bladder cancer, and single‑session therapy with surgically implanted spacers between organs and tumors — the hospital has brought new hope to patients for whom conventional radiotherapy was ineffective. Thanks to its unique physical and biological advantages, heavy ion therapy is now indicated for more than 100 types of malignant tumors. To date, the hospital has successfully treated more than 3,000 patients from all provinces and municipalities across China, as well as from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and countries including Belgium, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Canada, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand, Jordan, Serbia, Russia, and others. For many tumor types, our treatment outcomes have surpassed international benchmarks in the field.
