Professor Kohei Takizawa Joins to Boost Digestive Endoscopy Center as National Key Discipline

On July 6, in accordance with the cooperation agreements between the respective institutions, Professor Kohei Takizawa from the Kanagawa Cancer Center in Japan and Professor Qian Dongmei from Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, conducted their regular on‑site clinical work and technical teaching. This cycle focused on practical training in endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, international collaborative research discussions, and clinical teaching rounds. Through in‑depth surgical demonstrations and specialized academic lectures, the collaboration injected new momentum into the capacity building of the gastrointestinal diagnosis and treatment system in the Hexi Corridor region, drawing on international expertise.

This clinical session was led by Lu Linzhi, Director of the Digestive Endoscopy Center at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, with President Wu Zhengqi and the center's entire medical and nursing team participating throughout. During the session, Professor Takizawa and Professor Qian jointly conducted teaching on two challenging endoscopic procedures. The first case involved chromoendoscopy with magnification for early gastric cancer, and the second was a combination of magnification endoscopy and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early esophageal cancer. Through step‑by‑step demonstrations using real cases — from staining identification and magnified observation strategies to ESD technical points — the professors provided hands‑on guidance to help participating physicians master standardized procedural pathways. In the subsequent lecture session, the two professors focused on cutting‑edge endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, with dedicated Q&A and case discussion segments. Using typical cases of gastric and colorectal cancer, they provided in‑depth analysis of diagnostic challenges and treatment strategies, offering participants an opportunity to integrate theory with practice. The lecture was attended by medical and nursing staff from Liangzhou Hospital and Wuwei Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, as well as trainees enrolled in the Gansu Chronic Disease Training Program. The session was marked by a strong academic atmosphere and lively interactive discussions. During the interactive teaching segment, the expert team engaged in a panel discussion on key topics such as "clinical research design in gastrointestinal oncology, pathways for multicenter collaboration, and strategies for translating research findings into practice." This provided the Digestive Center with a comprehensive development framework that combines international perspectives with locally adapted approaches, supporting the enhancement of its research capacity.

In recent years, the Digestive Center at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has moved beyond the limitations of shallow, fragmented international exchanges by establishing a long‑term, sustainable collaboration model based on Professor Takizawa's regular on‑site presence. This framework enables expert continuity, rapid technology transfer, and deep conceptual integration. As Director of the Department of Gastroenterology at Kanagawa Cancer Center and a board member of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES), Professor Takizawa brings extensive expertise in international frontier techniques, including the SNADET diagnostic and treatment protocol and full‑process ESD optimization. He has led research on SNADET treatment strategies and authored ESD of the Esophagus, Stomach, and Duodenum: Fundamentals and Techniques of Operation, Diagnosis, and Treatment, with profound expertise and extensive clinical experience in ESD technical skills, efficacy enhancement, and complication prevention.

Through an immersive training model combining specialized lectures, surgical demonstrations, and case debriefing, Professor Takizawa guides our physicians to deepen their understanding of key endoscopic techniques for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Follow‑up case‑based discussions allow for close integration of theory and practice, helping the team internalize international standards of "zero‑miss precision diagnosis and zero‑error minimally invasive treatment" as ingrained clinical practice.

The center uses international collaboration as an accelerator for clinical research, building a tripartite discipline development system that integrates clinical care, research, and education. Through joint panel discussions between Chinese and Japanese experts, the center aligns international research frontiers with local clinical needs. Collaborative efforts focus on key areas such as multicenter studies in gastrointestinal oncology, innovative applications of endoscopic techniques, and optimization of diagnostic and therapeutic pathways for complex cases — forming a positive feedback loop in which clinical questions guide research directions, and research outcomes in turn inform clinical practice. At the same time, the case discussions and technical training from these collaborative meetings are transformed into ongoing educational resources. This approach not only cultivates a pool of interdisciplinary talent with strong theoretical and practical skills but also advances the discipline from a "technology follower" to a "standard setter," providing sustained momentum for the development of a national‑level key discipline.

As a leading institution in digestive health in the Hexi Corridor region, the Digestive Endoscopy Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will take this clinical teaching session as an opportunity to further build a regional collaborative development network focused on "technology transfer, talent development, and resource sharing." Going forward, the center will continue to deepen international academic exchanges and technical collaboration, translating cutting‑edge international technologies into enhanced clinical service capacity. This will enable the center to provide more precise, less invasive, and higher‑quality diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with gastrointestinal tumors in Gansu and surrounding regions, contributing pivotal strength to the high‑quality development of regional digestive health.
