Renowned Expert Professor Zhao Ren: Clinical Guidance & MDT at Wuwei Heavy Ion Center
From May 14 to 15, Professor Zhao Ren from the Department of Radiation Oncology at General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University was invited to visit the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. During his visit, he focused on conducting teaching ward rounds in the Second Department of Radiation Oncology and participated in multidisciplinary consultations. He also organized in‑depth discussions on complex cases. This initiative to bring in high‑quality national‑level medical resources aims to further enhance our hospital's comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment capabilities, allowing local patients to receive top‑tier medical services without having to leave their hometown.

Professor Zhao Ren is a senior expert and chief physician in the field of radiation oncology. He serves as a standing committee member of the Chinese Society of Radiation Oncology and a member of the Lung Cancer Professional Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association, among other academic positions. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic tumors, with particular expertise in the comprehensive treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mediastinal tumors using radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. He has accumulated rich experience in both clinical practice and research.

During this clinical guidance visit, Professor Zhao Ren conducted thorough rounds in the radiation oncology ward, carefully inquiring about each patient's condition, treatment progress, and physical status. He engaged in in-depth discussions with the medical and nursing team at the center. Together with the team, he analyzed key diagnostic and treatment issues for individual patients, formulated precise and personalized follow-up treatment plans, and emphasized that cancer treatment is a comprehensive, systematic process that requires integrating multiple factors such as the patient's general condition, tumor type, and stage, to ensure that each treatment plan is both scientifically sound and specifically tailored. Additionally, Professor Zhao participated in multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultations, working with specialists from relevant departments to develop comprehensive treatment strategies for complex cases, further strengthening the center's multidisciplinary collaboration framework.

During the multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultation session, Professor Zhao Ren, Professor Fan Ruitai, and Professor Yee-Min Jen jointly led several in-house radiotherapy specialists in comprehensive discussions and lively debates on multiple complex and challenging tumor cases. Integrating core patient information such as tumor stage, pathological type, and general health status, they provided detailed explanations and authoritative evaluations from multiple perspectives, including optimal timing of radiotherapy, precise target volume delineation, formulation of combined treatment regimens, and prevention and management of adverse effects. Their insights helped our hospital team broaden their diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives, standardize clinical procedures, optimize treatment strategies, and elevate the overall level of multidisciplinary collaborative care.

Professor Zhao Ren's visit is another vivid example of our hospital's commitment to the mission of "gathering world‑leading technologies to benefit cancer patients everywhere." As the only medical institution in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, our hospital maintains an open and inclusive approach, building academic bridges. We focus not only on the introduction and innovation of cutting‑edge international radiotherapy technologies but also on the development of clinical support systems such as radiotherapy treatment optimization and multidisciplinary collaboration. By regularly inviting nationally renowned experts to conduct ward rounds, consultations, teaching, and mentoring, we are advancing clinical practice toward standardization and elevating our diagnostic and treatment capabilities toward greater uniformity. This ensures that top‑tier technologies truly take root at the grassroots level and benefit the general population.
