Renowned Expert Professor Lan Shengmin Provides Precision Radiotherapy Care at Our Hospital
On May 15, Professor Lan Shengmin, Chief Physician of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Shanxi Cancer Hospital, visited the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to conduct outpatient consultations, ward rounds, and teaching lectures.
Professor Lan Shengmin is a Chief Physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Shanxi Cancer Hospital, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Head and Neck Tumor Professional Committee, and a renowned expert in the field of radiotherapy in the province. With years of deep experience in radiotherapy and comprehensive treatment of malignant tumors, he specializes in the precision diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers, neurological tumors, bone and soft tissue tumors, skin cancers, breast cancer, lymphoma, lung cancer, and more. He has particularly mature diagnostic and treatment protocols for intracranial and cervical metastatic tumors. Proficient in radiotherapy, hyperthermia, chemotherapy, and biotherapy, he emphasizes individualized combination therapy to improve tumor control rates and patient quality of life.
During ward rounds, Professor Lan Shengmin visited the radiotherapy ward, carefully assessing the recovery and treatment progress of hospitalized cancer patients. While patiently reassuring patients and meticulously addressing various diagnostic and treatment concerns raised by family members—thereby alleviating patient anxiety—he also engaged in in-depth discussions with our hospital's radiotherapy and oncology medical and nursing teams on specific patient cases. He provided detailed, step‑by‑step guidance on key aspects such as radiotherapy target delineation, treatment dose adjustment, optimization of comprehensive treatment plans, complication prevention and management, and follow‑up strategies. He shared cutting‑edge diagnostic concepts and practical clinical experience, helping our medical team further solidify their foundational knowledge in radiotherapy and enhance their clinical diagnostic and treatment skills.
Following the ward rounds, Professor Lan Shengmin delivered a specialized lecture titled "Head and Neck Nodal Classification and CTV Delineation" for the medical and nursing staff of our hospital's radiotherapy and oncology departments. Drawing on his years of clinical experience and the latest domestic and international guidelines, he systematically explained the principles of lymph node classification in the head and neck, the key points of clinical target volume (CTV) delineation for different primary tumors, and common technical challenges and avoidance strategies during the delineation process. During the lecture, Professor Lan also performed live delineation demonstrations using typical cases and engaged in interactive discussions with the attending physicians regarding practical difficulties encountered in their daily work. This further enhanced the team's standardization and practical proficiency in precise radiotherapy target delineation for head and neck tumors.

Professor Lan Shengmin's teaching visit to our hospital represents an important achievement of the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, as it upholds the "patient-centered" service philosophy, continuously promotes the distribution of high-quality medical resources to the grassroots level, strives to enhance regional diagnosis and treatment capabilities, and effectively addresses the practical problems of "long travel distances for medical care and difficulty accessing specialist consultations."
As a core hub for heavy ion tumor therapy in China, the center relies on domestically developed heavy ion treatment systems, which officially commenced clinical operation on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has successfully completed precise heavy ion and photon therapy for over 530 tumor patients, covering a range of challenging malignancies including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma. The unique technical advantages and significant clinical efficacy of precision heavy ion radiotherapy have been fully validated, bringing new treatment hope to numerous cancer patients.
