COVID-19 Is Ruthless, Heavy-Ion Therapy Responds with Compassion

Because of trust, they traveled from afar to seek treatment at our center

In mid-October 2021, as the sudden COVID-19 pandemic began to quietly spread across the Northwest, many cities around Wuwei entered special prevention and control measures, leaving once-bustling streets sparsely populated. Yet, the pandemic could not dampen cancer patients’ hope for life, nor could it diminish the remarkable efficacy of heavy-ion therapy in treating tumors. Undeterred, they made the resolute journey to Wuwei.

Recently, Mr. Yang (pseudonym), a nasopharyngeal cancer patient from Taiwan, learned of the proven efficacy of Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. Despite the severe COVID-19 pandemic, he did not hesitate. Taking personal protective measures throughout his journey, he traveled a long distance, undeterred by the hardships, to reach Wuwei. With his nucleic acid test report in hand, he received treatment at the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center.

An elderly patient from Zhejiang, accompanied by family members, drove all the way to Wuwei, enduring a long and dusty journey from afar.

A young pancreatic cancer patient from Henan also made the long and arduous journey, successfully arriving in Wuwei.

They all embarked on this remarkable journey against cancer, driven by a longing for life, hope in heavy-ion therapy, and trust in the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center.

There are many, many more cases like this…

Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is a distinguished landmark of Wuwei City, equipped with China's first independently developed heavy-ion tumor therapy system. Heavy-ion cancer treatment technology is one of the most advanced tumor treatment methods of the 21st century, known for its high biological effectiveness, proven efficacy, non-invasiveness, and low side effects. It is highly effective against most solid tumors and is particularly suitable for cases where surgery is not feasible, tumors are insensitive to conventional radiation, or tumors have recurred after previous treatments. Since its opening, the center has consulted with over 20,000 patients and treated 463 patients with heavy-ion therapy. The treated conditions include more than 40 types of tumors, such as glioma, liver cancer, lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Patients have come from over 20 regions, including Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou. Post-treatment outcomes have shown confirmed efficacy and good tolerance. The center was the first in China to report the "bystander effect" and "abscopal effect" in heavy-ion cancer therapy and pioneered treatments for breast cancer and bladder cancer using heavy-ion technology in the country.

Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has engaged renowned experts such as Professor Yee-Min Jen, former chairman of the Taiwan Radiation Oncology Association, and Professor Wu Jiaming, chief physicist at Taiwan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, to work long-term on-site. Over the past decade, more than 50 medical professionals have completed advanced training in heavy-ion-related specialties in the United States, Germany, Japan, Shanghai, and other locations.

Patient trust drives our work. The medical staff of the Heavy Ion Center at Gansu Wuwei Academy of Medical and Science remain committed to upholding the trust of patients while ensuring strict pandemic prevention and control measures, continuing to write miracles of life.
