Longyuan Gains 'Nuclear' Momentum: National Nuclear Medicine Demonstration Base Settles in Wuwei, Charting a New Blueprint for Western Health Development in the 15th Five-Year Plan

On October 31, the Kick-off Meeting (19th Session) of the Promotion and Demonstration Project for Nuclear Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment—led by the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association—was ceremoniously held at Wuwei Cancer Hospital in Gansu Province.

After rigorous selection, this national demonstration projecthas officially settled in the hospital. This milestone not only marks the hospital’s successful entry into the ranks of national demonstration bases for nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatmentbut also ushers its nuclear medicine discipline into a new era of standardized, regulated, and high-quality development. More importantly, it will deliver better, more precise, and more accessible medical servicesto the people of Wuwei and the broader Northwest China.

The event served as both a comprehensive review of the hospital’s five-year development achievementsand a forward-looking launchpad: taking the 15th Five-Year Planas a new starting point, it unveiled the hospital’s strategic layout of cutting-edge oncology diagnosis and treatment technologies. It is now forging ahead at full speed toward its ambitious goal: to become “the National Regional Medical Center for Heavy Ion Radiotherapy with the Most Comprehensive Tumor Radiotherapy Modalities in Western China”.

As a key benchmark platform for heavy ion tumor treatment in China, Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Gansu Province)has long been deeply engaged in oncology diagnosis and treatment. It has consistently leveraged integrated multidisciplinary developmentas a driving force, sparing no effort to advance upgrades in precision medicine technology and service innovation.

Nuclear medicine—serving as a core supporting discipline for precision medicine—has emerged as a distinctive branded disciplineunder the hospital’s prioritized cultivation. This achievement is underpinned by its solid clinical experience, state-of-the-art hardware facilities, and a high-caliber, specialized talent pipeline.

The hospital’s successful designation as a National Demonstration Base for Nuclear Medicine Diagnosis and Treatmentnot only validates its hard strength in discipline construction but also reflects high recognition from the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Associationfor its work in clinical practice, talent training, and technology dissemination. It sets a referable and exemplary benchmarkfor grassroots nuclear medicine development across Western China and beyond.

The launch of this demonstration base project not only summarizes the hospital’s five-year progress but also marks a critical starting point for its journey into the 15th Five-Year Planera.

It is understood that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Centerwill focus on cutting-edge tumor treatment innovation. Key priorities include:

•Deploying frontier technologies such as light ion therapy, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), alpha isotope targeted therapy, and cell therapy;

•Advancing core tasks like constructing heavy ion science and innovation platforms, attracting and cultivating high-level talents, incubating medical equipment, and issuing heavy ion industry standards.

The center aims to become a national cradle for heavy ion talent, an academic hub, and a research stronghold. It is committed to building—at an early date—the “National Regional Medical Center for Heavy Ion Radiotherapy with the Most Comprehensive Tumor Radiotherapy Modalities in Western China”, and contributing a stronger “Wuwei Strength” to advancing Healthy Chinain the western region.
