The "Wuwei Model" Benefits Millions

Since 2006, with the full support of Professors Yu Zhonglin and Huang Xiaojun from Beijing Friendship Hospital, Wuwei has implemented the "Rural Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Early Diagnosis and Treatment Project," a major national healthcare reform initiative. After nearly two decades of effort, the project has achieved remarkable progress:

  • Significantly curbing the rise in gastric cancer incidence and mortality rates, achieving a substantial dual decline.
  • Providing life-saving hope for countless patients.
  • The "Wuwei Model" for upper gastrointestinal cancer prevention has long benefited over 1 million residents in Wuwei. Through "three-early" (early detection, early diagnosis, early treatment) prevention, residents have actively improved their living environments, dietary habits, and lifestyles while participating in large-scale early screening programs.
  • Compared to 2006, Wuwei has seen a 50% reduction in gastric cancer incidence and mortality.

Additionally, the Department of Gastroenterology has completed:

  • The National Science and Technology Benefiting the People Program project "Demonstration of Prevention and Control Models in Wuwei's High-Risk Areas for Malignant Tumors."
  • The National Public Welfare Industry Special Project "Prospective Evaluation Study on Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Screening."
  • Led the implementation of the National Key R&D Program projects "Establishment and Usability Study of Standardized Large Gastric Cancer Cohorts" and "Validation and Application Research of Biomarkers for Gastrointestinal Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment."
  • The Gansu Provincial Key R&D Program project "Study on Genetic Factors Related to Gastric Cancer in Wuwei Using Gene Detection Technology."
  • Hosted and participated in provincial and municipal research projects such as "Sequential Method for Gastric Cancer Screening and Its Promotion" and "Clinical Application of Covered Mesh Esophageal Stent Placement," contributing to a near 50% decline in upper gastrointestinal cancer incidence in Wuwei.
  • Saved countless lives from cancer and enabled tens of thousands of early-stage upper gastrointestinal cancer patients to return to work and enjoy happy lives.
