Fujian Cancer Hospital Delegation Visits Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for Heavy Ion Therapy Exchange

On the afternoon of August 26, a delegation led by Liu Jingfeng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Fujian Cancer Hospital, paid a visit to Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for an on-site tour and academic exchange. The visit aimed to deepen the synergy between oncology institutions in eastern and western China, with a focus on the clinical translation of domestic heavy ion technology and scientific research innovation. The goal is to help upgrade the domestic heavy ion treatment system and elevate the standard of care for complex malignant tumors to new heights.

During the visit, Liu Jingfeng and his team toured the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, visiting key areas such as the scale model room, core treatment area, and central control room. They closely observed the operational status of the domestic heavy ion treatment system and the whole-process management protocols of clinical diagnosis and treatment, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the practical application of independently innovated equipment and the progress of clinical care. Liu Jingfeng highly commended the hospital's fruitful achievements in the localization of heavy ion technology, clinical treatment of difficult tumors, and the enhancement of its international influence in the field. He also praised the hospital's integrated development model of "medical care + culture + health preservation," as well as its beautiful healing and recuperation environment.

Following the tour, the two sides held a special symposium, chaired by Qiu Jinjun, Secretary of the Party Committee of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. At the meeting, Zhang Yanshan, Vice President of Wuwei Cancer Hospital, delivered a keynote report titled "Heavy Ion Therapy for Liver Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer." He systematically reviewed the hospital's clinical practice in heavy ion treatment for advanced liver and pancreatic cancers and shared hands-on experience in heavy ion precision radiotherapy using high-frequency oscillating respiratory control technology. Liu Jingfeng, Secretary of the Party Committee of Fujian Cancer Hospital, introduced the construction plan, disciplinary layout, and development strategy for his hospital's Heavy Ion and Proton Center project.

During the discussion session, Ye Yancheng, President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, presented the hospital's phased progress in heavy ion research. He elaborated on a series of research initiatives, including studies on heavy ion biological effects, preclinical animal experiments, drug clinical trials, and laboratory resource sharing, conducted in collaboration with Lanzhou University. He also proposed a forward-looking vision of using Transformer large models to assess tumor heterogeneity and explore personalized and precise customization of radiation doses within tumors. Professor Yang Tian from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University affirmed this research direction, believing it holds promising prospects for implementation and expressed anticipation for in-depth future collaboration. The two sides engaged in deep discussions on topics such as standardized diagnosis and treatment of advanced liver cancer, research project design, cross-institutional collaborative research, and individualized precision radiotherapy. They also proactively explored the application of cutting-edge technologies like nanorobots, clarified the implementation steps of starting with real-world clinical research before advancing to randomized controlled trials, and agreed to build a full-chain cooperation model spanning "clinical diagnosis/treatment - basic research - achievement transformation." Both parties expressed sincere gratitude to Ma Lizhen, Chairman of Guoke Ion Taiji, for bridging and facilitating this exchange and cooperation.

As the clinical application demonstration base for China's first domestically developed heavy ion treatment system with independent intellectual property rights, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital relies on the robust technological support of the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has established a synchronous operation pattern for heavy ion equipment across its two campuses in Wuwei and Lanzhou, making it the world's only medical institution equipped with two heavy ion treatment systems. Since the heavy ion treatment system was officially put into clinical use in March 2020, the hospital has provided precision radiotherapy services to over 3,000 patients from home and abroad. Its diagnosis and treatment services cover all provinces and regions in China and several overseas countries. The range of treatable cancer types has expanded to over 100, and the hospital has accumulated a wealth of localized clinical data and mature diagnostic and treatment experience in heavy ion therapy for highly prevalent malignant tumors in China, such as liver and pancreatic cancers. The hospital is equipped with high-precision imaging and positioning systems, along with a professional team of radiation physics technicians, laying a solid technical and talent foundation for individualized precision radiotherapy.

This in-depth exchange between the cancer hospitals of Fujian and Gansu marks a new chapter in their comprehensive strategic cooperation. Moving forward, the two hospitals will leverage their respective strengths in disciplines, platforms, and clinical resources to carry out deep collaboration in clinical research, scientific research projects, and achievement transformation. They will share clinical data and research platforms, jointly conduct multi-center clinical studies on heavy ion therapy for liver and pancreatic cancers, systematically summarize the diagnostic and treatment data and localized experience of Chinese cancer patients, and ultimately create an internationally leading "Chinese solution" for heavy ion therapy.
