On October 22, Professor Chen Jun, Director and Chief Physician of the Neurology Department at the First Hospital of Lanzhou University, visited the Neurology Department of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Wuwei Heavy Ion Center) to hold a specialist clinic and teaching rounds. His on-site guidance brought provincial-level expertise in the management of Parkinson's disease and movement disorders directly into a neurology department built around a heavy-ion platform, giving patients with Parkinson's disease and dystonia across the Hexi region access to provincial specialist care close to home, while adding a crucial piece — standardized, disease-specific management of Parkinson's — to the department's distinctive "conventional care plus heavy-ion therapy" development path.

On the day of the clinic, the waiting area was full of patients who had travelled in from surrounding cities and counties, many of them living with advanced Parkinson's disease and struggling to stabilize their medication regimens. Professor Chen saw each patient individually, enquiring carefully into their response to medication and fluctuations in symptoms, and examining them to assess the severity of both motor and non-motor manifestations before giving specific recommendations for adjusting each patient's drug regimen. He then went on to the wards for teaching rounds, where, using concrete cases of advanced Parkinson's disease and dystonia, he gave a full demonstration of clinical reasoning from medication adjustment through to the choice of subsequent treatment pathways, and drew on his extensive experience with botulinum toxin therapy to advise on key points in managing the relevant cases. Department physicians consulted him on questions including enrolment criteria for heavy-ion treatment of Parkinson's disease, the selection of assessment scales and the design of follow-up time points, further clarifying the standardized pathway for delivering precision Parkinson's care on the heavy-ion platform.

Professor Chen currently serves as Director of the Neurology Department at the First Hospital of Lanzhou University and Director of the Neurology Teaching and Research Section at the First Clinical Medical College of Lanzhou University. He holds academic posts including standing member of the Neurodegenerative Disease Committee of the Chinese Society of Microcirculation, standing member of the Vertigo Disease Committee of the Chinese Society of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, and vice chair of the Neurology Committee of the Gansu Medical Association. He has been named an Outstanding Physician of Gansu Province and one of the Top Ten Physicians of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University. His work centres on movement disorders: he established the first dedicated Parkinson's disease clinic in Gansu Province and pioneered the use of botulinum toxin type A for focal dystonia and hemifacial spasm in the province, and he is a member of the expert panels of both the Western China Parkinson's Disease Prevention and Treatment Alliance and the Northwest Parkinson's Disease Prevention and Treatment Alliance. The experience he has accumulated in building a disease-specific clinic connects directly, in methodological terms, with the clinical exploration of heavy-ion treatment for Parkinson's disease now under way in the neurology department at Wuwei Cancer Hospital.

This visit has infused the department's Parkinson's specialty capability with hands-on experience of standardized provincial-level management. As a municipal key discipline and one of the second batch of national neurointervention construction centers, the department already has a solid record of regional service in cerebrovascular intervention and stroke care. Looking ahead, the hospital will build on its specialty alliance mechanisms and continue to deepen collaboration with the neurology department of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University in specialist training, consultation on difficult cases and clinical research, advancing the department steadily along a dual track — interventional care securing the front line against acute and critical conditions, and disease-specific management deepening the substance of our distinctive therapies. The aim is for the combined strengths of high-quality provincial resources and domestically developed heavy-ion technology to translate into long-term health benefits that are genuinely accessible and sustainable for people with Parkinson's disease across the Hexi region.
