[International Medical News] Renowned International Radiotherapy Expert Prof. Gyoergy Kovacs Visits Wuwei Heavy Ion Center for Clinical Guidance

The Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is honored to invite internationally acclaimed radiotherapy expert Prof. Gyoergy Kovacs, recipient of the ESTRO Lifetime Achievement Award, to provide clinical guidance.

From July 10 to 12, Prof. Kovacs will offer special outpatient services, delivering personalized treatment plans of international standards for patients. Additionally, he will conduct teaching rounds in wards, collaborating with our medical team to discuss complex cases and share cutting-edge radiotherapy concepts and clinical expertise.

With profound academic accomplishments and extensive clinical experience in tumor radiotherapy, Prof. Kovacs’ visit will bring invaluable international perspectives to our center.

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, as the first hospital in China to clinically apply heavy ion therapy systems and currently the only hospital in the world operating two heavy ion systems, has accumulated over five years of clinical practice. With more than 2,000 patients treated, covering over 50 disease types including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and liver cancer, its clinical efficacy and patient survival rates have reached internationally advanced level

The hospital has achieved "eight world and domestic firsts": The only hospital globally operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously. The hospital with the highest number of single-fraction treatments completed within one day worldwide. The first globally to implement precision heavy ion therapy under ventilator control. The first globally to develop bladder cancer treatment technology with precise bladder volume management. The first globally to perform single-session heavy ion therapy using surgically placed spacer pads between organs and tumors. The first in China to develop a 360° rotatable and adjustable ion therapy chair. Previously, the center had long-term collaborations with Professor Tasuku Kanai from Gunma University School of Medicine in Japan, Professor  Tsujii hirohiko, former director of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Professors Jörg Hauffe (Hao Fei) and Olga from the Munich Proton Therapy Center RPTC in Germany, Professor Yee-Min Jen, former chairman of the Taiwan Radiation Oncology Society, Professor Jia-Ming Wu, renowned radiation physicist at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, and the team led by Professor Junjie Wang, chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Recently, the center has recruited additional world-class experts for long-term appointments, including Professor Yasuo Yoshioka from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Japan, Professor György Kovács, former Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Lübeck (Germany) and ESTRO Lifetime Achievement Award recipient , and Professor Dong-He Wu from the TMU Proton Center at Taipei Medical University. The addition of these leading experts has established a comprehensive expert think tank covering the entire spectrum of heavy ion therapy, integrating Eastern and Western medical wisdom, and further strengthening the center's talent matrix.
