Wuwei Heavy Ion Center 5th Anniversary: Celebrating the 'Heavy Ion Cup' & 'Green Origin' Nanhang Flyjoy Cycling Open
Recently, Nanhang Magazine featured a prominent report on Wuwei’s 'Heavy Ion Cup' and 'Green Origin' Flyjoy Cycling Open. Using the event as a lens, the coverage highlighted the five-year achievements of China’s heavy ion therapy system in clinical applications, framing the dynamism of sports alongside breakthroughs in medical technology. This offers the public a window into the thriving development of sports and med-tech innovation in Gansu and Wuwei.

The open tournament kicked off on May 18 in Liangzhou District, Wuwei City, Gansu Province, under the theme "Cycling in the Hometown of Heavenly Horses · Exploring the Charm of Liangzhou." It seamlessly integrated competitive sports, eco-tourism, and medical technology, attracting professional athletes and cycling enthusiasts from around the world to showcase their skills in Liangzhou. Co-organized by the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, Liangzhou District Bureau of Culture, Sports, Radio, Television, and Tourism, and Liangzhou Green Origin Ecological Construction Co., Ltd., the event gained significant visibility and prestige with the strong support of China Southern Airlines Group Culture & Media Co., Ltd. as a key sponsor.

The cycling open tournament commenced as the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center celebrated a significant milestone – five years of clinical application of China's first heavy ion therapy system. Over the past five years, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has broken foreign technological monopolies, transforming a "national treasure technology" into "public welfare". As one of the most advanced global cancer treatment methods in the 21st century, heavy ion therapy boasts unique advantages including minimal radiation damage to healthy tissues, shorter treatment cycles, and higher control rates. Since its official launch in March 2020, the Wuwei center has treated over 2,000 patients from across China, covering more than 50 disease types. Patients have come from all provinces and regions including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as from countries such as Australia, Belgium, South Korea, and Malaysia. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, operational since November 2024, has already completed photon and heavy ion treatments for more than 150 patients, demonstrating China's leading position in high-end medical equipment globally. Clinical analysis of high-grade gliomas shows remarkable efficacy of heavy ion therapy, with average survival time extending to 29 months - nearly double the 14.8 months achieved through conventional photon radiotherapy.

Named the "Heavy Ion Cup," this cycling open tournament symbolically connects the dynamism of sports with the health-preserving mission of the Heavy Ion Center. From local beginnings to national prominence, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center carries profound significance. As a flagship technological landmark of the city, it leverages cutting-edge medical technology as a strategic pivot, catalyzing the efficient convergence of talent, capital, and innovation resources. This has propelled Gansu's transformation from a "healthcare resource-scarce region" to an "international hub of medical technology," reshaping regional healthcare competitiveness. Globally, the center has contributed China's precision radiotherapy solutions to the world, marking a distinct Chinese presence on the map of international cancer treatment. Its achievements stand as a testament to China's commitment to technological excellence and its role as a responsible leader in scientific advancement.
