Good News: Wuwei Cancer Hospital Excels in Provincial Thyroid Surgery Skills Competition
On August 21-22, the "2026 Gansu Provincial Medical Skills Competition for Thyroid Perioperative Care" was successfully held in Lanzhou. Hosted by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission and organized by Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center Gansu Hospital (Gansu Provincial Cancer Hospital), the event brought together top thyroid surgeons from across the province to compete in core modules such as perioperative diagnosis and treatment standards, nursing case analysis, and emergency response. With their solid expertise and composure, our Head and Neck Surgery team added new luster to the hospital's reputation.
Since receiving the notice in June, the Head and Neck Surgery Department has attached great importance to the event and quickly formed a team, with Director Zhou Junnian leading the development of a systematic training plan. On the day of the preliminaries organized by the Wuwei Municipal Health Commission, the team successfully advanced to the provincial finals. During the two-month intensive preparation period, the department conducted multiple simulation drills and special training sessions focusing on key areas such as thyroid perioperative diagnosis and treatment standards, nursing case analysis, and emergency response, continuously consolidating theoretical foundations and refining operational skills. At the finals, the three contestants—Associate Chief Physician Han Xiaoqin, Attending Physician Tao Yongli, and Head Nurse Liang Qiying—remained calm and coordinated tacitly, demonstrating solid professional competence and excellent clinical comprehensive abilities in basic theory assessment, surgical video presentation, nursing case analysis, and other sessions.
After fierce competition, the Head and Neck Surgery medical team won the second prize in the team category, and all three contestants simultaneously won the second prize in the individual category. This achievement fully reflects the overall strength of our Head and Neck Surgery Department in the field of thyroid disease perioperative diagnosis, treatment, and nursing. It is also a manifestation of the department's long-term adherence to standardized management and emphasis on talent cultivation.

The Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital was established in 1998. It is a municipal key discipline and the only specialty in the prefecture-level cities of the province featuring head and neck tumor diagnosis and treatment. The annual outpatient volume is about 6,000, and the annual surgery volume is about 500, with the number of thyroid tumor surgeries ranking first among prefecture-level cities. The department took the lead in independently performing standardized modified radical neck dissection, standardized treatment of thyroid tumors, resection of benign and malignant parotid tumors, and radical surgery for laryngeal cancer in the prefecture-level cities. In 2021, it took the lead in introducing endoscopic-assisted radical surgery for thyroid tumors. Surgeries for oral cancer and nasal sinus cancer are also at a regional leading level.
In recent years, our hospital has always adhered to the "patient-centered" development philosophy, continuously strengthened discipline construction and talent cultivation, and actively promoted various clinical departments to benchmark against provincial standards and hone excellent skills. The excellent results achieved by the Head and Neck Surgery Department in this provincial competition are not only a concentrated display of the department's comprehensive strength but also a vivid microcosm of the hospital's long-term emphasis on the connotation construction of medical quality. Taking this opportunity, our hospital will continue to strengthen the diagnosis and treatment capabilities of critical and difficult diseases, continuously improve the regional medical service level, and contribute greater strength to safeguarding the lives and health of the people and promoting the high-quality development of the city's health cause.
