Bridging Academia and Clinical Practice
Bridging Academia and Clinical Practice: Expert Team from Wuwei Vocational and Technical University School of Nursing Conducts Joint Ward Round at Our Hospital
To further deepen the substance of clinical nursing and empower the high-quality development of nursing education, a team of seven faculty members from the School of Nursing at Wuwei Vocational and Technical University, led by Professor Chen Lin, Vice Dean of the school, visited our hospital on the afternoon of May 21st. They collaborated with the nursing team of the Geriatrics Department to conduct a joint nursing round for a patient with cerebral infarction and engaged in in-depth discussions regarding collaboration in hospice care. The event was hosted by Jing Yang, Head Nurse of the Geriatrics Department, Pain Department, and Second Department of Endocrinology.
Clinical Immersion: Bedside Teaching with Compassion
The session began with Professor Chen Lin and her colleagues entering the patient’s ward, accompanied by the department’s nursing staff, to observe the patient’s condition firsthand. Assisted by the primary nurse, the expert team conducted a systematic and detailed nursing assessment, inquiring thoroughly about the patient’s medical history and current symptoms, while communicating warmly with the patient. This bedside teaching seamlessly integrated key nursing assessment points with hands-on clinical practice, providing a vivid, real-world lesson for both clinical nurses and nursing students present.

Professional Presentation: Fostering Academic Dialogue
Subsequently, the group moved to the demonstration classroom of the Geriatrics Department. Under the guidance of Head Nurse Jing Yang, Primary Nurse Ma Xiaoli delivered a comprehensive presentation covering the nursing assessment, diagnoses, interventions, and outcome evaluation for the case. Following the report, both institutions engaged in a robust discussion.

Faculty experts offered professional insights and optimization suggestions from multiple dimensions, including comprehensive geriatric assessment, timing of rehabilitation intervention, and management of comorbidities. In her remarks, Professor Chen Lin praised the clarity of the nursing pathway and the thorough implementation of holistic nursing concepts, noting that it fully demonstrated the solid professional foundation and profound humanistic care awareness of the clinical nursing team. She also provided in-depth guidance on refining diagnostic accuracy and selecting evidence-based nursing rationales.

Focus on Hospice Care: Launching Research Collaboration
After the nursing round, both parties held a thematic seminar focused on hospice care. Head Nurse Jing Yang outlined the progress and phased plans for establishing a dedicated hospice care ward within the department. Against the backdrop of actively addressing population aging, providing warmer, higher-quality care for patients at the end of life has become a critical shared challenge for both clinical practice and nursing education. Professor Chen Lin spoke highly of the preparatory work for the hospice ward. Both sides explored avenues for clinical practice, talent cultivation, and research directions, reaching a significant consensus: to jointly apply for a research project on hospice care funded by the Wuwei Municipal Science and Technology Bureau. This initiative aims to drive practice through research and nourish teaching through practice, working together to propel the high-quality development of regional hospice care services.
Collaborative Progress: Writing a New Chapter in Partnership
The event concluded with a group photo, marking a successful close to this university-hospital collaborative activity.

This joint nursing round stands as a vivid example of the deep integration of clinical practice and education, representing a valuable exploration of how academic and clinical institutions can synergistically advance the nursing discipline. Using this event as a new starting point, the Geriatrics Department of our hospital will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with the School of Nursing at Wuwei Vocational and Technical University. We are committed to expanding collaboration in areas such as clinical teaching, scientific research, and the development of hospice care specialties, pooling resources to provide patients with higher-quality, more compassionate nursing services.
