On May 20, Professor Liu Yuanzao, Chairman of the Stereotactic Radiotherapy Committee of the National Tumor Minimally Invasive Industry Alliance and Chief Physician of the Radiotherapy Department at Beijing Hospital, officially joined the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital under a regular on-site residency model, injecting strong new momentum into the development of our hospital in the field of tumor treatment.

As a Chief Physician and Master's Supervisor, Professor Liu Yuanzhao has an exceptionally distinguished professional background. He holds multiple important positions, including Standing Committee Member of the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Prevention and Treatment Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care, and Vice Chairman of the Head and Neck Molecular Diagnosis and Treatment Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Chinese Journal of Metastatic Cancer and the Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery, and is an expert evaluator for Beijing's bidding and medical record quality assessment, continuously leading the direction of radiotherapy technology at the national level. In clinical practice, Professor Liu's expertise aligns precisely with the center's needs. With years of deep experience in tumor radiotherapy, he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck tumors, having treated nearly a thousand patients with head and neck tumors using X‑ray stereotactic radiotherapy. In recent years, he has focused on high‑dose irradiation for early‑stage tumors and image‑guided intensity‑modulated radiotherapy, successfully achieving curative outcomes for elderly cancer patients.

Professor Liu Yuanzhao quickly integrated into the team and became deeply involved in core clinical work. He provided specialized guidance on complex cases, working with the medical and nursing team to analyze conditions and optimize treatment plans. While ensuring treatment precision, he placed great emphasis on patient tolerance and, through hands‑on teaching, continuously elevated the team's overall diagnostic and treatment capabilities. Following this, Professor Liu led the team in meticulous and thorough ward rounds, personally inquiring about each patient's condition, reviewing the latest test results, and adjusting treatment details at the bedside based on physical examination findings, ensuring that every cancer patient receives high‑quality medical care aligned with international standards.

Professor Liu Yuanzhao was also invited to deliver a special lecture titled Radiotherapy for Hypopharyngeal Cancer. Drawing on his extensive clinical experience and cutting‑edge research findings in this field, he provided the medical and nursing team with radiotherapy concepts and technical guidance aligned with international best practices, leaving a profound impact on all attendees.

Professor Liu Yuanzhao's regular clinical visits to our hospital represent an important achievement of the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital in upholding its "patient-centered" service philosophy, continuously promoting the distribution of high-quality medical resources to the grassroots level, striving to enhance regional diagnosis and treatment capabilities, and effectively addressing the practical problems of "long travel distances for medical care and difficulty accessing specialist consultations."

As a core hub for heavy ion tumor therapy in China, the center relies on domestically developed heavy ion treatment systems, which officially commenced clinical operation on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has successfully completed precise heavy ion and photon therapy for over 530 tumor patients, covering a range of challenging malignancies including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma. The unique technical advantages and significant clinical efficacy of precise heavy ion radiotherapy have been fully validated, bringing new treatment hope to numerous cancer patients.
