【National Renowned Expert on Daily Duty】Professor Wan Jianping Resident Consultation – Protecting Geriatric Digestive Health
Recently, Professor Wan Jianping, Director of the Surgery Teaching and Research Office and Director of the Department of Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Surgery at Chongqing Three Gorges Medical College, visited the Department of Geriatrics at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. He conducted a series of activities including professional guidance on geriatric intestinal diseases, teaching ward rounds, and discussions of complex cases. With his profound knowledge and exquisite minimally invasive techniques in the field of gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery, Professor Wan has helped elevate the diagnostic and treatment capabilities for intestinal diseases in the hospital's Department of Geriatrics to new heights.

Professor Wan Jianping is an Associate Chief Physician and a member of the Communist Party of China. He currently serves as Director of the Surgery Teaching and Research Office and Director of the Department of Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Surgery at Chongqing Three Gorges Medical College. He previously pursued advanced studies in General Surgery at Southwest Hospital Affiliated to Third Military Medical University and in Colorectal Surgery at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital. Professor Wan specializes in minimally invasive and open surgeries for gastrointestinal tumors such as gastric cancer and colorectal cancer, total pelvic exenteration, minimally invasive repair of abdominal wall hernias, minimally invasive surgery for intractable constipation and gastroesophageal reflux disease, and minimally invasive treatment of common perianal diseases. He also serves as a member of the Gastrointestinal Tumor Professional Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association and a Standing Director of the China Rectal Cancer Sphincter-Preserving Surgery Alliance, among other academic positions. He has led one district-level research project, participated in one municipal teaching reform project, published five papers, been granted three patents, and co-authored one monograph.

During this professional guidance visit, Professor Wan Jianping conducted clinical teaching activities focusing on geriatric intestinal diseases in the ward of the Department of Geriatrics. During ward rounds, he interviewed and examined patients, reviewed medical records and imaging reports, analyzed the conditions taking into account the characteristics of elderly patients such as multimorbidity and declining organ function, and exchanged insights on diagnostic rationale, surgical indications, and perioperative management. With his extensive clinical experience and rigorous professional expertise, Professor Wan provided strategic direction for the department's clinical diagnosis and treatment.

During the complex case discussion session, Professor Wan engaged in exchanges with the Department of Geriatrics team at our hospital on several cases of intestinal diseases, including advanced gastric cancer, complex colorectal cancer, recurrent rectal cancer, and intractable constipation in elderly patients. He shared his personal clinical experience in areas such as preoperative evaluation, neoadjuvant treatment strategies, individualized surgical planning, application of minimally invasive techniques, and prevention and management of perioperative complications, providing valuable references for the department's diagnostic and treatment work.

Professor Wan Jianping's visit to our hospital is part of our ongoing efforts to bring in high-quality medical resources and strengthen the capacity building of key specialty departments such as Geriatrics.
