【Nationally Renowned Experts Daily】Needle-Based Precision Ablation: Multiple Ultra-Minimally Invasive Surgeries in One Day, Benefiting Patients in Jinchang, Wuwei & Beyond
On April 23, Professor Peng Chengzhong, a leading expert in the field of minimally invasive interventions in China and a member of the Minimally Invasive Tumor Treatment Center at Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, was once again invited to the Heavy Ion Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. During his visit, he conducted ward rounds, consultations, and ultrasound-guided ultra-minimally invasive interventional procedures. Using just a single ablation needle, Professor Peng precisely treated the patients' lesions. That day, he performed consecutive procedures on multiple patients from Jinchang and the local area. Among them, one patient was a hospital staff member, who received full exemption from expert and consultation fees—a reflection of the hospital's patient-centered public welfare mission.

Professor Peng Chengzhong has been deeply engaged in the field of minimally invasive tumor interventions for many years and enjoys a strong reputation within the medical community. He has completed over 10,000 tumor interventional procedures to date, and his techniques in parathyroid and uterine ablation are internationally leading. During this visit to the hospital, Professor Peng, as always, went deep into the clinical frontline. He first conducted specialized ward rounds in the inpatient area, carefully reviewed patients' medical histories, previous treatments, and physical conditions, and precisely assessed lesion details using high-resolution ultrasound findings. He also engaged in in-depth discussions with the minimally invasive treatment team at Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, analyzing patients' conditions, clarifying diagnostic and treatment approaches, and providing professional recommendations.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Professor Peng personally performed multiple consecutive ultrasound-guided ultra-minimally invasive interventional procedures. Among them, a patient with uterine fibroids from Jinchang underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation of uterine fibroids. During the procedure, Professor Peng focused on accurately identifying the lesion boundaries, striving to protect the surrounding normal tissue while ablating the lesion. Additionally, two patients with bilateral multiple breast nodules received ultrasound-guided microwave ablation. One of them was a hospital staff member, for whom the hospital waived the expert and consultation fees. Both patients recovered smoothly after the procedure, and they and their families expressed satisfaction. Furthermore, one patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma and another with bilateral multiple cystic adenomas of the thyroid underwent ultrasound-guided microwave ablation of thyroid nodules—a procedure characterized by minimal trauma. Notably, another patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma received a clear diagnosis after a detailed consultation and precise needle biopsy performed by Professor Peng. Based on the patient's condition, referral for surgical treatment was recommended, thereby providing the patient with a clearer and more appropriate treatment pathway.

After completing the surgeries, Professor Peng went deep into the clinical frontline and conducted specialized ward rounds in the inpatient area. He carefully assessed patients' postoperative recovery, evaluated the surgical outcomes using high-resolution ultrasound findings, and engaged in in-depth discussions with the minimally invasive treatment team at the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, providing professional recommendations for subsequent treatment.

As the only hospital in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has long been committed to the innovative development of tumor treatment technologies and the decentralization of high-quality medical resources. Since the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center officially began clinical treatment in March 2020, it has successfully treated over 2,700 patients across more than 50 disease types, with patients coming from all provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China, including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, as well as several other countries. Professor Peng Chengzhong's latest visit to the hospital has enabled patients from surrounding regions such as Wuwei, Zhangye, Jinchang, and Alxa to conveniently access advanced ultra-minimally invasive treatment technologies without having to travel to first-tier cities, effectively addressing the practical healthcare needs of local patients.
