Guided by Care, Guarded with Expertise: Lanzhou Campus Radiotherapy Department I Successfully Concludes PICC Patient Exchange Event

On the afternoon of April 21st, the Radiotherapy Department I at the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital hosted a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) specialized nursing patient exchange event, themed "Guided by Care, Guarded with Expertise." The department's nursing team, alongside PICC specialist nurses, provided a professional, practical, and compassionate health education session for over 20 inpatients and their families.

The event focused comprehensively on the core aspects of PICC lifecycle care, offering systematic and highly practical content. It covered everything from the definition, indications, and contraindications of PICC placement, to daily maintenance protocols, flushing and locking techniques, and key points of dressing changes. Topics also included complication prevention, guidance on functional exercises, home safety management, and identification of abnormal situations. Each point was explained in detail and demonstrated on-site. Nurses provided hands-on instruction and one-on-one answers to patients' questions regarding catheter care, daily life activities, bathing, dressing, and exercise. Health education manuals were distributed, and patients were encouraged to share recovery experiences with each other, truly ensuring nursing knowledge was thoroughly understood and practical skills were effectively taught.

Aiming to make science resonate, nursing tangible, and service warmer, the event addressed patients' primary concerns about safety and comfort, extending professional nursing guidance from the hospital room to the home. Through on-site teaching and interactive guidance, patients demonstrated significantly improved self-care adherence and health management capabilities, with on-site satisfaction reaching 98%.

One catheter, safeguarding the entire treatment journey. One commitment, warming the path to recovery.

Radiotherapy Department I remains committed to its patient-centered approach. We will continue to refine specialized nursing, meticulous health services, and excellent doctor-patient communication. With professionalism and compassion, we strive to build a robust health defense for our patients, walking alongside each one on their journey to recovery and hope.

Established on October 28, 2024, Radiotherapy Department I (Lanzhou Campus) is a specialized oncology radiotherapy center integrating medical care, education, and research, with a core focus on heavy ion technology. Its formation responds to the provincial "Strengthening the Provincial Capital" initiative, aimed at advancing Gansu's heavy ion industry and fostering an integrated operational model between Lanzhou and Wuwei. The department was founded by relocating a core group of clinical, research, and medical professionals specializing in heavy ions from Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to the Lanzhou campus.

As a nationally recognized key discipline construction unit, the department is dedicated to heavy ion research and clinical application. Building upon extensive experience in treating tumors across all body sites with heavy ions, the department continuously refines its clinical expertise. It has established particular proficiency in treating cancers such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymic cancer, tracheal cancer, breast cancer, pleural tumors, mediastinal tumors, bone metastases, osteosarcoma, chordoma, Ewing's sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, liposarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Leveraging the unique physical and biological advantages of heavy ion radiotherapy, the department comprehensively combines it with targeted therapy, immunotherapy, cellular immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and other modalities for a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment.

Core Values: Excellence through Innovation, Synergy for Impact, Dedicated Research, Committed Clinical Practice.

The department currently comprises 1 Chief Physician, 1 Associate Chief Physician, 2 Senior Attending Physicians, 2 Resident Physicians, 4 individuals holding Master's degrees, and 11 nursing staff. Several team members have been engaged in heavy ion clinical work and research since the registration clinical trials of China's first domestically produced carbon ion therapy system in 2018. The team benefits from the long-term guidance of over 50 renowned domestic and international experts, including Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Radiation Oncology. This guidance is facilitated through established expert consultation platforms, supporting activities like complex case consultations, academic lectures, charity clinics, and ward rounds. Key team members have also pursued advanced studies at prestigious institutions such as the RPTC Proton Therapy Center in Munich, Germany, and leading heavy ion and photon therapy centers within China.
