On March 27, Professor Liu Yuanzhao, Chairman of the Stereotactic Radiotherapy Committee of the National Tumor Minimally Invasive Industry Alliance and Chief Physician in the Department of Radiotherapy at Beijing Hospital, officially joined the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital in a regular on-site capacity, injecting strong new momentum into the development of our hospital in the field of oncology treatment.

As a Chief Physician and Master's Supervisor, Professor Liu Yuanzhao holds a highly prestigious professional background. He serves in several key roles, including as a standing member of the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Prevention and Treatment Branch of the China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care, and as a deputy director of the Head and Neck Tumor Molecular Diagnosis and Treatment Committee of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association. He is also a member of the editorial boards of the Chinese Journal of Metastatic Cancer and the Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery, as well as a evaluation expert for bidding and medical record quality in Beijing. At the national level, he continues to lead the direction of radiotherapy technology. In clinical practice, Professor Liu Yuanzhao's expertise precisely aligns with the needs of the center. With years of deep experience in the field of tumor radiotherapy, he specializes particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck tumors, having treated nearly a thousand patients with head and neck tumors using X-ray stereotactic radiotherapy. In recent years, he has focused more on high-dose irradiation for early-stage tumors and image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy, successfully achieving curative outcomes for elderly cancer patients.

Professor Liu Yuanzhao quickly integrated into the team and became deeply involved in core clinical work. He regularly conducts ward rounds and outpatient consultations, provides specialized guidance on complex cases, and works closely with the medical and nursing teams to assess patient conditions and optimize treatment plans. While ensuring treatment precision, he places great emphasis on patients' treatment tolerance. Through hands-on mentoring, he continuously enhances the team's overall diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, ensuring that every cancer patient receives high-quality medical care aligned with international standards. Additionally, Professor Liu has been invited to give special lectures, sharing his extensive clinical experience and cutting-edge research findings from his field of expertise. These lectures have brought internationally aligned radiotherapy concepts and technical guidance to the medical team, greatly benefiting all attendees.

Professor Liu Yuanzhao's regular on-site clinical service at our hospital represents a significant achievement in the commitment of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to upholding a "patient-centered" service philosophy, continuously promoting the allocation of high-quality medical resources to the grassroots, enhancing regional diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and effectively addressing the practical challenges faced by the public, such as "long travel distances for medical care and difficulty accessing specialist consultations."

As a core hub for heavy ion tumor treatment in China, the center relies on the domestically developed heavy ion treatment system, which officially entered clinical operation on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has successfully completed precision treatments using heavy ions and photons for over 450 tumor patients, covering a wide range of complex conditions including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioma. The unique technological advantages and significant clinical efficacy of precision heavy ion radiotherapy have been fully validated, bringing new hope for treatment to numerous cancer patients.
