From Despair to Rebirth: A Three-Year Survivor's Testimony of Living with Advanced Lung Cancer
From Despair to Rebirth: A Three-Year Survivor's Testimony of Living with Advanced Lung Cancer
When I was diagnosed at a provincial hospital in March 2023 with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the left upper lung and spinal metastases to the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae due to lower back pain accompanied by numbness in both legs, when words like "advanced lung cancer" and "risk of high paraplegia" sliced through the tranquility of my life like sharp blades, I once believed this was the final chapter of my life.
1 A glimmer in the darkness
On the day of diagnosis, I curled up in the hospital corridor, counting the cracks in the floor tiles as if measuring the days left in my life. When the chemotherapy needle pierced my vein, I told myself, "This might be the last time I feel pain." But the tears of my family and the encouragement of my friends were like fireflies in the dark night—faint, yet bright enough to illuminate the path ahead.
2 Days of Racing Against Death
Accompanied by my family, I made my way to the Chemotherapy Department of Wuwei Cancer Hospital. With the precise treatment and support from Director Wang Huijuan and her medical team, a multidisciplinary approach was first adopted: I underwent "posterior lumbar 1 vertebral canal decompression and fusion, nerve release and internal fixation + L5 vertebral body cementoplasty." This was followed by 6 cycles of regular "immunotherapy combined with palliative chemotherapy," along with zoledronic acid bone protection treatment every 28 days. Subsequently, I received stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the thoracic and lumbar vertebral metastases. Afterward, my condition stabilized following 2 years of regular immunotherapy maintenance, and treatment was discontinued. To date, three full years have passed, and my condition remains stable. When the treatment ended, I suddenly realized: living itself is the most precious gift of all.

3 Looking back at the self who survived the disaster, it turns out that everything has cracks, and that's where the light shines through
Grateful that time has not forsaken me, bestowing upon me a journey strewn with thorns; thankful for the years' kindness, granting me a life of wandering. For the rest of my days, I shall eventually become immune to all harm, my smile unrestrained. Now, looking back from the shore of time, those days and nights battling the disease have long been forged into medals of honor gifted by life.
When the chemotherapy needle pierced my vein, even my breath tasted of rust; during those sleepless nights tossing and turning, the moonlight outside the window was as cold as a verdict. But standing here now, touching the words "no abnormalities detected" on my follow-up report, I suddenly realize: at the very end of the darkest tunnel, light truly does hide.
Three years ago, I thought cancer was the end of life; now I understand, it was the starting point of my rebirth. Those days of being ground down taught me: true bravery isn't about never falling, but being able to hum a tune and get back up after you fall.
You see, spring has arrived again.
Today, I deliberately wore a red dress when I went out, just like when I first walked out of the hospital three years ago. Cherry blossoms are falling rustling in the wind, children run by flying kites, and the old man selling candied hawthorns smiles, his face full of wrinkles. I suddenly remember the words I wrote during treatment: "If living is a game, then defeating cancer is an achievement I can brag about for a lifetime, right?"
Yes, I won. And this victory is called "being alive."
