China’s Heavy Ion Therapy: A New Hope for Cancer Patients
China’s Heavy Ion Therapy: A New Hope for Cancer Patients
-- China Heavy Ion High-Quality Development & Green Healthcare Model Promotion Conference Successfully Held in Tianjin
China's heavy ion therapy technology, with its core advantages of "precisely targeting lesions and significantly reducing side effects," has become a "national treasure" in the field of cancer treatment. The key principle behind it is the "Bragg Peak" effect – the high-energy particle beam can precisely focus its energy on the tumor site, directly causing double-strand DNA breaks in cancer cells, making them irreparable, while maximally protecting the surrounding normal tissues. It has shown significant therapeutic value especially for complex tumors such as liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and brain glioma, which are "close to sensitive organs" or "difficult to resect surgically."

As the core practice base for heavy ion therapy in China, the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, after ten years of construction and five years of clinical practice, has achieved the impressive record of "eight firsts domestically and internationally," solidifying China's leading position in this field with robust capabilities: It is the only hospital in the world operating two heavy ion treatment systems simultaneously. Since taking over the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center a year ago, it has formed a "dual-center coordination" structure, significantly increasing treatment capacity and service coverage. In terms of treatment efficiency, the center leads the world in the number of "single-fraction treatments completed in one day" procedures performed, greatly shortening treatment cycles and reducing the physical and mental burden on patients. Regarding technological breakthroughs, it has pioneered "precision heavy ion therapy under respiratory gating control," "bladder cancer treatment under bladder volume control," and "single-session treatment using spacers placed between organs and tumors." Each innovation embodies the dedication of the research and clinical teams, opening new hope for patients with complex conditions. In equipment development, it created China's first 360° rotatable and adjustable ion radiotherapy chair, providing hardware support for precision treatment. Pushing treatment boundaries, it completed the world's first multiple cases of heavy ion therapy for cardiac tumors and pioneered the "Heavy Ion Therapy + Whole Life Cycle Physical and Mental Health Management" model, leading industry development from technology to service.

Clinical data bears witness to the center's growth: the number of treatable disease types has expanded from 7 during the 2018 clinical trial period to over 50 today; the annual number of treatments has jumped from 200 to nearly 1,000 cases, with an average annual growth rate of 17.5%. To date, it has successfully provided treatment to more than 2,300 patients, covering all provinces and municipalities across China. It has also attracted patients from countries like Belgium and Australia, seeking its services, indicating continuously rising international recognition.
To truly make this advanced medical technology accessible to more patients, China has innovatively established a full-chain support system integrating "Healthcare + Insurance + Aviation": In collaboration with China Life, it launched the "Million-Yuan Medical Insurance + Heavy Ion Treatment Green Channel," providing up to 5.55 million yuan in medical coverage and one-stop reimbursement services to alleviate patients' financial pressure. Partnering with China Southern Airline Media, it created "Green Healthcare Aviation Services," specifically addressing the travel difficulties of cross-regional patients. Meanwhile, the center regularly invites top global experts from countries like Japan and Germany for on-site guidance, ensuring its technical standards remain synchronized with the international forefront.

To raise awareness about heavy ion technology and its benefits among more patients, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital held the China Heavy Ion High-Quality Development and Green Healthcare Model Promotion Conference in Tianjin on October 30. The meeting was presided over by Vice President Cai Qinghua of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. Attendees included Dr. Wang Peiguo, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Professional Committee and Director of Radiotherapy at Tianjin Cancer Hospital; Professor Wang Huaqing, Director of the Oncology Department at Tianjin Medical University Second Hospital; Professor Li Junjie, Chief Physician of the Liver Transplantation Center at Tianjin First Central Hospital; Professor Wang Hao, Chief Physician at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital; Professor Chen Liming, Deputy Chief Physician specializing in General Surgery at Tianjin Hospital; Professor Peng Qiufeng, Deputy Chief Physician at Tianjin Fourth Central Hospital; Dr. Song Qinghong from Tianjin People's Hospital; Professor Zhao Xinpeng, Deputy Chief Physician at Tianjin Haihe Hospital; Professor Zheng Aiqing, Deputy Chief Physician at Tianjin Kanghui Hospital; Professor Liang Yuexiang, Deputy Chief Physician at Tianjin Cancer Hospital; and other radiotherapy and oncology specialists from various hospitals in the Tianjin region.

At the conference, Professor Zhang Yanshan, Vice President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, presented the "Heavy Ion Hospital Construction Achievements and Five-Year Clinical Report," comprehensively showcasing the recovery miracles and technological breakthroughs involving nearly 2,300 patients. The practical pathway of this system was interpreted in detail; Mr. Xiao Zanjang, Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection of China Southern Airline Group Culture and Media Co., Ltd., first shared the measures taken by China Southern Airlines to support the high-quality development of heavy ion therapy. Mr. Chen Suhua, Sales Director of the Digital Marketing Center, then introduced the "High-Quality Green Healthcare Aviation Services," addressing travel challenges for cross-regional patients. Mr. Jiang Wei, Project Leader (Wuwei Branch) for China Life's "Million-Yuan Medical Insurance + Heavy Ion Treatment Green Life Channel," elaborated on the exclusive protection plan. Subsequently, during the "Media Q&A, Expert Answers" session, authoritative experts addressed questions from the media and attendees regarding heavy ion technology and the green healthcare model. Twenty mainstream media outlets, including Tianjin Daily, Tianjin Morning Post, and Tianjin Express, provided full coverage of the event.
