Successful Convening of the Launch Meeting for the 2025 National Major Public Health Project — Early Diagnosis and Treatment of Upper Gastrointestinal Cancers in Rural Areas of Fengle Town, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City

Gansu Province is a region with high cancer incidence and mortality rates, particularly for esophageal and gastric cancers. According to statistics, the incidence and mortality rates of gastric cancer in our province rank first in the nation. Gastric cancer has become a major disease with distinct regional characteristics that restricts our province's socio-economic development and poses a serious threat to people's health. Wuwei City was designated as a screening site for the early diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer under the central government's transfer payment project in 2009, for esophageal/gastric cardia cancer in 2010, and for upper gastrointestinal cancers in 2012. As the implementing unit, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has been conducting project screenings for 16 years. This has not only trained a team of technical professionals for our city but has also effectively promoted the construction of a comprehensive prevention and treatment system for upper gastrointestinal cancers in Wuwei.

On the morning of October 20, 2025, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital held the 2025 launch meeting for the rural upper gastrointestinal cancer early diagnosis and treatment project in the conference room on the fifth floor of the Fengle Town Government building in Liangzhou District, Wuwei City. Attendees included Vice President Nie Peng of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, Director Lu Linzhi of the Digestive Center, Director Hu Junguo of the Public Health Department, and project staff from the Public Health Department; Secretary Xu Duoping of the Fengle Town Party Committee, Deputy Mayor Zhang Jinfeng of Fengle Town, village Party branch secretaries and directors from Fengle Town, responsible persons from village clinics in Fengle Town, and specialized health cadres, among other relevant personnel.

At the launch meeting, Deputy Mayor Zhang Jinfeng delivered an important speech, requiring village committee cadres in Fengle Town to carefully organize and complete the project work with guaranteed quality and quantity. She also urged all village doctors to widely publicize this beneficial project for the early diagnosis and treatment of upper gastrointestinal cancers, further enhancing their service capabilities in serving the people.

Vice President Nie Peng of our hospital pointed out that the project leadership team must strictly carry out their work in accordance with the project's technical operation standards to ensure the quality of the project. He required the project leadership team to carefully streamline the workflow, improve satisfaction among the eligible population participating in the project, and guarantee medical safety. The aim is to provide the public with a full-chain project service, ensuring early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment.

The leader of the technical team for the rural upper gastrointestinal cancer early diagnosis and treatment project and Director of the Digestive Center at Wuwei Cancer Hospital, Lu Linzhi, conducted project training for the attendees. Director Lu Linzhi provided explanations on three aspects: the project background, the significance of the project work, and the content of the project screenings, and also addressed on-site questions related to the project.

As a core component of the National Major Public Health Service Project for chronic disease prevention and control, the rural upper gastrointestinal cancer early diagnosis and treatment project carries the sacred mission of safeguarding public health and life, promoting the equalization of public health services, and comprehensively strengthening the capacity of primary healthcare services. It is a livelihood project that benefits the people. Our hospital will further promote the standardization and normalization of gastrointestinal cancer screening efforts, strive to shift the focus of cancer treatment earlier, comprehensively improve the level of early diagnosis and treatment, and work towards achieving the goal of "reducing both the incidence and mortality rates of gastrointestinal cancers, and increasing both the early diagnosis/treatment rate and survival rate," thereby effectively safeguarding the health of the city's residents.

Residents who meet the following conditions can contact us or come forward to participate in the free upper gastrointestinal cancer screening:

1. Rural household registration in Liangzhou District (Xiying Town, Kangning Town, Huaian Town, Jinshan Town, Wuhe Town) and long-term residence in Liangzhou District.
2. Aged between 40 and 69 (based on the date on the ID card).
3. No prior diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal cancer.
4. Have not previously participated in the upper gastrointestinal cancer screening project at our hospital.

Free Screening Items: Painless Gastroscopy, Upper Abdominal Ultrasound, Electrocardiogram, Four Infectious Disease Tests, Blood Glucose and Blood Pressure Measurement.
