Tied to Heavy Ions, Rooted in the Northwest—Taiwanese Renowned Expert Yee-Min Jen Continues Writing a Touching Chapter in Cross-Strait Medical Cooperation
On September 22, Yee-Min Jen, a renowned expert spanning the medical fields across the Taiwan Strait and a specially appointed professor at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, renewed his work contract after five years of service, officially embarking on a new journey at the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. As a dual-appointed expert at both the Wuwei and Lanzhou Heavy Ion Centers, Professor Yee-Min Jen, through his "five-year dedication and two contract renewals," has injected new momentum into cross-strait precision radiotherapy cooperation and the development of local heavy ion medical technology.

Professor Yee-Min Jen, holding a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree and serving as a doctoral supervisor, boasts a profound and distinguished professional background. He has previously held key leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Taiwan Society of Radiation Oncology, Professor of Radiation Oncology at the National Defense Medical Center (Taiwan), and Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Tri-Service General Hospital (Taiwan).
In clinical practice, he specializes in standardized, individualized, and evidence-based multidisciplinary comprehensive oncology care, with particular expertise in radiation therapy, chemotherapy, stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) for esophageal cancer and head and neck cancers, as well as palliative and supportive care for cancer.
In academic research, over the past two decades, he has led 28 research projects and published more than 70 SCI-indexed papers. He remains a pivotal bridge fostering oncological exchanges and collaboration across the Taiwan Strait.

After joining Wuwei Cancer Hospital in his early years, Yee-Min Jen immersed himself deeply in the medical development of China's Great Northwest as a pragmatic "doer." In clinical practice, he leads his team daily to carefully review each patient’s condition, tailoring personalized treatment plans, and through patient communication, he helps patients rebuild their confidence in combating cancer. In terms of disciplinary development, from providing detailed guidance on target delineation to sharing cutting-edge international technologies, he has been fully committed to driving the dual enhancement of the hospital’s radiotherapy capabilities and talent cultivation. He has thus emerged as a key "driving force" behind the growth of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center.

To continuously consolidate its technical advantages and strengthen its standard system, Wuwei Tumor Hospital in Gansu Province has long established an international expert collaboration platform. While introducing global top-tier medical expertise, it actively promotes Chinese standards: it has successively recruited leading international experts such as Professor Tatsuaki Kanai from the Faculty of Medicine, Gunma University (Japan); Professor Hiroyuki Tsujii, former President of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (Japan); Professor Jörg Hauffe and Professor Olga, former Presidents of the Munich Proton Therapy Center (RPTC, Germany); Professor Yee-Min Jen, former Chairperson of the Taiwan Society of Radiation Oncology; and Professor Wu Jiaming, a renowned radiotherapy physicist from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taiwan). Through technical exchanges, these collaborations have facilitated the alignment of Chinese standards with international ones.
Recently, the hospital has further recruited Professor Yasuo Yoshioka from the Radiotherapy Department of the Cancer Institute of Japan and Professor György Kovács, Director of the Brachytherapy Center in Rübeck (Germany) and concurrently Director of Educational Programs at the Università del Sacro Cuore (Italy), to work long-term at the hospital. By integrating Chinese diagnosis and treatment standards into their clinical teaching and technical guidance, these experts are laying a solid foundation for developing an internationally competitive oncology treatment system and a platform for exporting Chinese medical standards.

This regular on-site assignment marks another firm step by Professor Yee-Min Jen in deepening his contributions to medical undertakings in the Northwest. Beyond continuing his daily clinical practice and teaching, he will further engage deeply in multidisciplinary consultations, collaborating with various departments to tackle complex cases. Meanwhile, he will deliver academic presentations focused on the latest radiotherapy research, driving the continuous updating of knowledge and skills among medical staff.

Now, with Yee-Min Jen’s renewed deep commitment, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is accelerating its journey toward becoming an "international demonstration center for heavy ion therapy." This progress is enabling Chinese high-end medical technologies to transcend geographical boundaries and benefit more patients.
