The successful event established a high-level academic platform for digestive disease professionals in Wuwei and surrounding regions. It not only fostered academic growth and disciplinary advancement but also elevated the standard of early gastrointestinal cancer diagnosis and treatment, offering stronger health safeguards for patients. Participants expressed immense satisfaction and pledged to apply the new techniques and methods learned to advance regional digestive disease care.

Talent Pool Strengthens Foundations
As a national hotspot for gastric cancer incidence, Wuwei has prioritized cultivating digestive disease specialists. Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has assembled a highly skilled and trusted team, led by luminaries such as: Chief Physician Zhang Zhiyi, founder of the hospital’s gastroenterology department and endoscopy center, a leading figure in Gansu’s healthcare system. First-Class Chief Physician Wu Zhengqi, a provincial pacesetter and model worker. Chief Physician Lu Linzhi, Chair of Wuwei’s Digestive Diseases Committee. The team also includes numerous senior experts like Zhang Wenhong (MD), Zhao Guangyuan (MD), Li Shihua, Liu Jindian (MD), and Xie Chunfang. Collaborating with surgical experts like Deputy Directors Nie Peng, Chen Hongbing, and Teng Tingpeng, the team boasts a multidisciplinary, tiered talent system.

Cutting-Edge Equipment and Technological Advancements
The hospital is equipped with three endoscopy centers and 15 procedure rooms, featuring nearly 20 suspended Olympus endoscopy systems and over 50 endoscopes, including enteroscopes, EUS, and chromoendoscopy/magnification endoscopy. The heavy ion center houses 10 standard GI endoscopy suites. Highlights include:Leading Gansu in painless endoscopy volume and adoption rate for eight consecutive years. Ranked first nationally in combined endoscopic-pathological diagnostics and upper GI cancer detection rates. Pioneered Gansu’s first robot-assisted transanal scarless appendectomy and EUS-guided bile duct drainage (EUS-BD). Routine advanced procedures: EMR, ESD, ERCP, STER, variceal sclerotherapy/ligation, stent placement for strictures, POEM, etc., with ESD volumes topping the province.

The "Wuwei Model" Benefits Millions
Since 2006, with the unwavering support of Professor Yu Zhonglin and Professor Huang Xiaojun from Beijing Friendship Hospital, the national healthcare reform flagship initiative—the "Rural Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Early Screening and Treatment Program"—was launched in Wuwei. After nearly two decades of dedicated efforts, the project has achieved remarkable milestones: Reversed the rising trends in gastric cancer incidence and mortality, achieving a dual decline in both metrics. Became a beacon of hope for countless patients, reigniting their chances of survival against despair. The "Wuwei Model" for upper GI cancer prevention has benefited over 1 million residents through its "Three Earlys" strategy (early screening, early diagnosis, early treatment), empowering the community to:
✔ Proactively improve living environments
✔ Modify dietary and lifestyle habits
✔ Participate actively in large-scale early screening campaigns organized by hospitals.
Tangible Outcomes:
Compared to 2006, Wuwei has seen a dramatic dual reduction in gastric cancer rates, with incidence halved over 20 years.
The Gastroenterology Department has spearheaded multiple national and provincial research initiatives, including:
"Demonstration of Cancer Prevention in Wuwei’s High-Risk Malignancy Zones" (National Sci-Tech Benefiting People Program)
"Prospective Evaluation of Upper GI Cancer Screening" (National Public Welfare Sector Project)
"Standardized Large-Scale Gastric Cancer Cohort Study" and "Validation of Biomarkers for GI Cancer Diagnosis/Therapy" (National Key R&D Program)
"Genetic Testing for Hereditary Gastric Cancer Factors in Wuwei" (Gansu Key R&D Program).
