Renowned Radiation Oncology Expert Dr. Zhang Yingdong Joins Wuwei Heavy Ion Center to Advance Cancer Treatment

On June 3rd, Dr. Zhang Yingdong, former radiation oncology expert at Peking University International Hospital, Director of the Radiotherapy and Oncology Treatment Center at Baoshan Anli Hospital, and Director of the Gamma Knife Center at Chongqing Sanbo Jiangling Hospital, officially joined the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. He now serves in the Department of Head and Neck Tumor Radiotherapy (Radiotherapy Department V), conducting clinical rounds, advising on complex cases, and guiding cutting-edge treatments. This significant development represents a major achievement of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital in advancing its talent strategy through its 50 expert workstations. It will play a crucial role in promoting the high-quality development of oncology treatment at our hospital.

Director Zhang Yingdong is a senior expert in the field of radiotherapy, holding a medical master's degree and the title of chief physician, with over 20 years of experience in oncology radiotherapy. He specializes in stereotactic radiotherapy for central nervous system diseases, as well as radiotherapy, comprehensive treatment, and personalized treatment for head and neck cancers. In clinical practice, he is proficient in the imaging staging characteristics and comprehensive treatment principles of head and neck tumors, enabling him to develop individualized cancer treatment plans for patients. With extensive clinical experience and profound academic expertise, Director Zhang has published numerous papers in authoritative journals such as Cancer Cell International, Chinese Journal of Radiation Oncology, and Chinese Journal of Cancer. He has achieved significant academic accomplishments. Additionally, he holds several academic and social positions, including member of the Radiotherapy Professional Committee of the Beijing Military Region, member of the Radiotherapy Professional Committee of the Hebei Anti-Cancer Association, and member of the Proton and Heavy Ion Radiotherapy Advisory Committee of the Beijing Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch. He is widely respected and influential in the field.

Director Zhang’s arrival underscores our hospital’s commitment to the Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and its 50 expert workstations. As the only hospital worldwide operating two heavy ion therapy systems, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a leader in advancing cancer treatment technologies. Since officially commencing clinical treatments in March 2020, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has successfully treated over 2,000 patients with heavy ion therapy, all achieving excellent clinical outcomes. The center has treated more than 50 types of cancers, including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma, with patients coming from all provinces, municipalities (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), and multiple countries such as Australia, Belgium, South Korea, and Malaysia.

Director Zhang Yingdong's  arrival has invigorated the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. During his ward rounds, Director Zhang went deep into the wards to thoroughly understand each patient's condition and treatment progress. He engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions with the doctors of the Head and Neck Tumor Radiotherapy Department, providing personalized treatment recommendations tailored to each patient's specific circumstances. He emphasized that cancer treatment is a comprehensive process that requires careful consideration of multiple factors, including the patient's physical condition, tumor type, and staging, to develop the most suitable treatment plan for each individual.

The addition of Director Zhang Yingdong and other experts will further enhance the center's academic development and clinical capabilities. Moving forward, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will continue to promote its established Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and five expert workstations, continuously strengthening its comprehensive strength. Under the leadership of experts like Director Zhang Yingdong, Professor Ma Changying, and Professor Fan Ruitai, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is poised to advance oncology care, offering hope to more patients.
