Upholding Foundations While Pioneering Progress: Steady Reform for Sustainable Development

On January 23, 2025, a special scheduling meeting for the performance evaluation of public hospitals across the province was held by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission. The meeting announced outstanding news: Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital was ranked in the top tier alongside large affiliated hospitals of Lanzhou University and provincial-level Class III Grade A hospitals in the latest national performance evaluation of tertiary public hospitals. It claimed the top spot among specialized hospitals in the province and secured first place among all hospitals in the Hexi Corridor region, setting a new record for Wuwei medical institutions in national evaluations. The National Performance Evaluation of Tertiary Public Hospitals (a comprehensive assessment of medical quality and hospital management standards) is a key initiative by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council to promote high-quality development in public hospitals. Regarded as the "gold standard" by the National Health Commission for evaluating the comprehensive medical capabilities and standards of tertiary hospitals nationwide, this annual assessment covers four major dimensions—medical quality, operational efficiency, sustainable development, and patient satisfaction—along with 56 specific indicators, including patient data, technical proficiency, and management competence. It represents the most authoritative and official hospital ranking system in China.

After nearly 50 years of remarkable transformation, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital became the first Class III Grade A hospital in the Jinchang-Wuwei region a decade ago when it passed the rigorous evaluation by China's National Health Commission. The hospital has not only put into operation China's first heavy ion therapy system but also manages the second domestic heavy ion treatment system at Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. To date, the hospital has completed nearly 1,800 heavy ion therapy cases, bringing new hope to cancer patients while setting new benchmarks in oncology treatment.

Optimizing Disciplinary Structure to Enhance Institutional Prestige

In terms of discipline development, the hospital has intensified its efforts in specialty cultivation, establishing three flagship clinical systems focusing on oncology, digestive diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. It has built five provincial-level key disciplines: Oncology, Gastroenterology, Radiotherapy, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine. Additionally, thirteen municipal-level key disciplines have been developed, including Cardiology, Hematology, Neurology, Thoracic Surgery, and Oncology Specialty Clusters. The Radiotherapy Department has entered a three-year construction cycle as a national clinical key specialty, while the Oncology Department passed on-site evaluation for provincial clinical key discipline status. The hospital has received national certifications as a Stroke Center, Chest Pain Center, and Trauma Center. These achievements have solidified its distinctive disciplinary features and technological advantages in cancer prevention/treatment and heavy ion therapy.

Heavy Ion Meets Wellness: Charting New Paths for Medicine

The hospital has collaborated with the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Wuwei Boruiling Medical Equipment Co., Ltd. to successfully develop and produce Wuwei City's and even Gansu Province's first fully intelligent medical devices, including a bladder volume measuring instrument and a 360-degree radiotherapy chair. They have also transformed local specialty products into high-value-added healthcare items such as the "Tranquil Nature" desertistanche deserticola tea and the "Herbal Wellness Tea" that combines medicinal and edible properties. It is reported that by 2025, medical devices including a diaphragmatic pacemaker, a positron detection and localization device (PET-CT detector), an automated hydroxybenzenealanine urine detector, an infusion management system, and a cost-control management system will be successively put into production. These achievements have established new benchmarks for Wuwei City in the global medical equipment field.
