First Aid Skills in the Square, Disaster Prevention Knowledge for the People

--Wuwei Academy of Medical and Science  Supports "5.12" Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Awareness Campaign

On May 12, 2025, coinciding with the 17th National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day, the joint disaster prevention, mitigation, and relief organization of Wuwei City and Liangzhou District held a themed publicity campaign titled "Everyone Prioritizes Safety, All Can Handle Emergencies—Identifying Disaster Risks Around Us" at the South City Gate Square. The Wuwei Institute of Medical Sciences actively responded to the call. Led by Zhang Zhenshuai, the assistant to the president, a professional team composed of medical staff from the emergency department and related departments participated in the event. Through emergency drills, interactive teaching, and science popularization activities, the team demonstrated the social responsibility and technical expertise of public hospitals in disaster prevention and mitigation.

At the event site, the hospital team simulated emergency rescue scenarios following an earthquake and demonstrated CPR techniques. The medical staffs standardized procedures and engaging explanations attracted a large crowd of onlookers. Zhang Zhenshuai, the assistant to the president, stated, "During disasters, the 'golden rescue window' often depends on the emergency response capabilities of first responders. Hospitals have a responsibility to make professional first-aid skills accessible to the public." The drill session also invited the public to participate in hands-on practice, with medical staff providing step-by-step guidance to correct movements, ensuring participants mastered basic first-aid basics.

The hospital team promoted health knowledge among the public—such as post-disaster trauma care and key hygiene precautions—by distributing illustrated brochures and staffing consultation booths. The event saw over 500 copies of educational materials distributed, benefiting more than 300 residents.

As a core force in regional medical emergency response, Wuwei Academy of Medical and Science has consistently integrated disaster prevention and mitigation into its emergency system, conducting regular internal drills and optimizing disaster rescue procedures. Through this event, the hospital not only demonstrated its professional rescue capabilities but also contributed to raising public awareness of disaster prevention by making scientific knowledge more accessible. By putting the principle of "people first, life first" into action, it has leveraged its medical expertise to help build a safer society.
