Partnering with China's first heavy ion therapy system, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Cancer Treatment System officially began admitting patients on November 15, 2024. The facility simultaneously established three radiation therapy departments (Radiotherapy Department I, II, and III) along with Ultrasound Medicine and Imaging departments, rapidly assembling a highly skilled radiation therapy team with rich clinical experience. To date, the center has treated 512 patient, including 77 photon therapy cases and 85 heavy ion therapy cases, setting new benchmarks in cancer treatment with its outstanding therapeutic outcomes.

The Department of Surgical Oncology serves as a crucial supporting unit for heavy ion therapy technology, specializing in tumor precision resection and minimally invasive treatment of solid tumors. Located on the 12th floor of the inpatient building, the department is led by an experienced team of surgical oncology experts. All complex procedures are performed by nationally renowned specialists from the Famous Expert Workstation. The department has pioneered a combined "surgery + heavy ion" treatment model that achieves synergistic therapeutic effects (1+1>2), perfectly integrating tumor precision resection with heavy ion therapy for optimal outcomes.

The Department of Medical Oncology/Hematology serves as an advanced center specializing in hematologic malignancies including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Leveraging the unique biological effects of heavy ion radiation on hematopoietic system tumors, the department has developed comprehensive treatment protocols combining "heavy ion radiotherapy + targeted therapy + immunotherapy". Located on the 11th floor of the inpatient building, the department is led by a specially appointed Chief Physician (Level 1) with profound academic accomplishments and extensive clinical experience, ensuring the highest standard of care.

The opening ceremony not only demonstrated the comprehensive capabilities of Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center in specialized cancer treatment, but also illuminated hope for cancer patients in northwest China through its commitment to "strengthening disciplines, refining technologies, and optimizing services." Moving forward, the center will anchor its development goals in high-quality healthcare, using heavy ion technology as its driving force and multidisciplinary collaboration as its foundation. It aims to contribute "heavy ion expertise" and "Gansu solutions" to establish new regional healthcare synergies, while writing a new chapter in cancer prevention and treatment that supports Healthy Gansu and Healthy China initiatives.

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an outstanding talent system gathering industry elites, forming an expert workstation led by 50 top authorities including Professor Shen Wenjiang (Lifetime Honorary Professor of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center) and Professor Xu Bo (Standing Committee Member of the Radiotherapy Society of Chinese Medical Association). With Professor Wang Junjie (Chairman of the Radiotherapy Society of Chinese Medical Association) serving as the hospital director, the center provides robust technical support for heavy ion therapy. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge medical equipment including Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerators, Elekta Infinity 4D image-guided linear accelerators, 3.0T simulation MRI, GE 256-slice premium CT, and Varian-192Ir imported after loaders. These advanced facilities lay a solid foundation for heavy ion treatment, ensuring highly efficient and precise therapeutic processes. Following China's first heavy ion treatment system, the second Chinese heavy ion cancer treatment system was put into clinical operation at Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. The center features four treatment cabins: No.1 horizontal spot-scanning terminal, No.2 horizontal+vertical uniform scanning terminal, No.3 vertical spot-scanning terminal, and No.4 45° uniform scanning terminal.
