What materials are needed for consultation before heavy ion treatment?

1.Personal  Identity and Basic Information

● Valid ID cards such as ID cards and medical insurance cards;

2. Medical diagnostic materials

● Pathology report, genetic test report (if  it's been checked);

●Imaging reports such as CT, MRI, ultrasound, PET-CT, etc.; test reports such as liver and kidney function, tumour markers, etc. (please organise in chronological order);

● Records of medical history such as the time of first diagnosis, the time of disease progression, other comorbidities, and drug allergies.

3. Treatment history

● Surgery (operation name, date, postoperative pathology report, etc.);

● Radiotherapy or chemotherapy (radiotherapy site, dose, course duration; name of chemotherapy drugs, cycle, efficacy and side effects records, etc.);

● Other treatments (targeted therapy, immunotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine, current medication list, etc.).

4. Personal question list

Please prepare questions according to the patient's own situation, such as the application, efficacy, course of treatment, side effects, etc., and the doctor will answer professionally during the consultation.

Initial diagnosis and evaluation

After the patient sends the relevant imaging materials to our consulting specialist, our specialist will organize the materials sent by the patient and immediately forward them to the online team of experts for an initial consultation and evaluation. The doctor will conduct a detailed radiological and pathological assessment based on the specific condition of the patient. This step is crucial in determining whether the patient is suitable for heavy ion treatment. Once the expert consultation results are available, we will promptly provide the preliminary results to the patient and engage in detailed communication.

The process of heavy ion therapy

1. Patient mould making

The patient is simulated in this step to ensure that the patient is accurately lying on the treatment table during the actual treatment. Based on the results of the simulation, the doctor will make a mould that is suitable for the patient to ensure the accuracy of the treatment.

2. Simulated positioning and target delineation

After the mold is made, positioning CT scan and positioning MRI scan will be performed, and then the image will be transmitted to the target hook system to complete the target delineation, and then submitted to the physicist for plan design and dose verification.

3. Treatment plan design

After the assessment, a team of specialists develops a personalized treatment plan. This includes the use of advanced imaging techniques such as CT, MRI, and PET to pinpoint the location and size of the tumor. The treatment plan is repeatedly validated to determine the dose, angle, and frequency of irradiation.

4. Formal treatment

Treatment is usually done by a team of professionals, including radiation oncologists, physicists, technicians, and care teams. Positional reduction is performed prior to formal treatment to ensure accurate target positioning, and after reduction, the patient is guided to the treatment room where he or she is irradiated according to the previously established treatment plan. During treatment, the patient needs to remain still and may need to be trained to control breathing movements as required by the treatment.

  1. Body membrane making and positioning CT/MRI
  2. Delineate the target area
  3. Develop a heavy ion therapy plan
  4. Doctors, physicists determine the plan
  5. Plan validation

Post-treatment follow-up and care

After treatment, patients need to undergo a period of recovery and have regular follow-ups to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. The care team provides the necessary care and guidance to help people manage side effects after treatment. Depending on the type and progress of the tumor, multiple courses of treatment may be required. There is an appropriate interval between each session so that the patient can recover.

Heavy ion therapy Answer questions about patients (costs) and other related questions

1. How long is the heavy ion therapy cycle? Or how long is the hospital stay for heavy ion therapy?

2. How much does heavy ion therapy cost?

3. Is heavy ion therapy reimbursed by medical insurance?

How long is the heavy ion therapy cycle? Or how long does hospitalization for heavy ion therapy take?

Regarding the length of hospital stay, treatment is a very precise process, and the preliminary preparation takes 7-10 days, including mantle, CT scanning, MRI, target delineation, planning, dose verification, repositioning, and expert consultation, before starting treatment. The treatment is started once a day, and the time for each treatment is very fast, usually 2-5 minutes, but the preparation time before and after takes 20~30 minutes. Therefore, with the addition of heavy ion therapy time, the overall hospital stay of the patient is about 40 days. In fact, during the whole treatment, the patient's experience was very good, and during the treatment, he relaxed and breathed calmly, and the treatment process was completed smoothly.

Generally, according to the purpose of the patient's treatment, it is divided into:

● Curative radiotherapy

● Adjuvant radiotherapy

● Palliative radiotherapy

A: How much does heavy ion therapy cost? Is it covered by Medicare?

In our Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, an irradiation site (within a target area) needs 200,000 yuan, and each additional site is increased by another 100,000 yuan. Ordinary hospitalization expenses (regular expenses such as medication, examination, and nursing expenses are generally about 30,000 yuan, which are related to systemic drug treatment.)

After receiving heavy ion therapy, the beds, medicines, examinations, and nursing expenses generated in the ordinary hospitalization expenses can be reimbursed through medical insurance (employees or residents), and the cost of 200,000 yuan for heavy ions is not reimbursed. However, if you have purchased Chinese Life and Chinese Insurance has launched a million medical + heavy ion medical green life channel, you can supplement the reimbursement through commercial insurance.

Precautions for patients with heavy ion therapy

●Throughout the course of treatment, patients should pay attention to a reasonable diet, nutritional supplementation, and necessary weight management. Because the daily weight change should not be too large, this will affect some of the overall profile of the patient.

●In the treatment of certain tumor diseases, it is necessary to strictly observe some bladder filling management, respiratory exercise training, and cooperate with the doctor to complete the preparation.

●During the whole treatment process, there are some marked dots and lines on the body, so we need to check whether these lines and dots are complete every day.
