The Northwest's First Advanced Particle Radiotherapy Innovation and Clinical Translation Forum, Northwest Gynecologic Oncology Collaboration Group Inauguration, and Gansu Provincial Anti-Cancer Association Brachytherapy Committee Annual Conference Successfully Held in Lanzhou

Spring Surges Along the Yellow River, Innovation Converges in the Golden City. On April 12, the field of oncology treatment in Northwest China witnessed a landmark event—the grand opening of the First Northwest Advanced Particle Radiotherapy Innovation and Clinical Translation Forum in Lanzhou. Concurrently, the Northwest Gynecologic Oncology Collaboration Group was officially established, and the annual conference of the Gansu Provincial Anti-Cancer Association Brachytherapy Committee concluded successfully. Distinguished radiation oncology experts, clinical scholars, and industry leaders from around the world gathered to explore cutting-edge particle radiotherapy technologies and chart new pathways for high-quality tumor diagnosis and treatment development in Northwest China.

The event featured a main venue and three parallel sessions on Brachytherapy, Interventional Minimally Invasive Therapy, and Ion Therapy. Internationally renowned experts were invited to present, including: György Kovács, Professor at the Education Program Center, Sacred Heart University (Italy) and Director of the Radiotherapy Center, Rostock University (Germany); Frank-André Siebert, Professor at Kiel University Hospital (Germany); Shiro Saito, Director of the Fukuoka Prostate Cancer Center (Japan); Yasuo Yoshioka, Professor at the National Cancer Center Japan; Luca Tagliaferri, Head of Tumor Interventional Department, Gemelli Hospital (Italy); Nguyen Van Đeng, Director of Head and Neck Radio-oncology, Vietnam National Cancer Hospital (Hanoi); Wang Junjie, President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Campus (Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center) and Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch, Chinese Medical Association; Zhang Fuquan, Professor at Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Beijing); Li Gaofeng, Chief Expert in Radiotherapy, Beijing Hospital; Fu Shen, Vice President of Guangzhou Taihe Cancer Hospital and Director of Proton Therapy Center; Yee-Min Jen, Former Chairman of the Taiwan Radiation Oncology Association; Wu Jiaming, Former Chief Physicist, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taiwan).

The opening ceremony was presided over by Qi Ying, Vice President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Campus. Ye Yan Cheng, President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, and Cai Hui, Chairman of Gansu Provincial Anti-Cancer Association, delivered keynote speeches. Professor Wang Junjie presented Letters of Appointment to international experts, including György Kovács, Yasuo Yoshioka, Shiro Saito, Frank-André Siebert, and Nguyen Van Đeng. President Ye Yan Cheng honored national experts, including Zhang Fuquan, Li Gaofeng, Zhang Yunyan (Harbin Medical University), Liu Chen (Peking University Cancer Hospital), Fu Shen, and others. Jointly unveiled the United Imaging 3.0T High-Aperture MRI (the only one in Lanzhou urban area) with Tan Guosheng (Co-President of United Imaging) and Ni Cheng (Radiotherapy Division President). Liu Zhenlin, Yin Shaohua, and Jia Boqi, Directors of the Equipment Management Section, Medical Engineering Department at Peking University Third Hospital, jointly presented a plaque to Zhang Qiuning and Li Xiaojun, Vice Presidents of Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, marking the official designation of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center as part of the "14th Five-Year Plan" Ministry of Science and Technology Major Initiative—a National Tumor Demonstration Project focused on domestic innovative radiotherapy equipment.

As the First High-End Academic Conference in Northwest China Focused on Carbon Ion and Advanced Particle Radiotherapy, Themed "Regional Collaboration, Innovation, and Progress", the forum featured four parallel sessions where leading domestic and international radiation oncology experts discussed the latest advancements in particle therapy, precision techniques for gynecologic oncology, cutting-edge minimally invasive tumor therapies, and shared clinical experiences in carbon ion therapy. Internationally renowned oncology experts from Italy, Japan, Vietnam, and China convened at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center for a free clinic, providing world-class diagnostic and treatment services to over 90 patients with complex conditions. This high-profile initiative united global expertise, offering hope to patients and marking a significant milestone in advancing oncology care in Northwest China.

To drive innovation in heavy ion radiotherapy, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has assembled a top-tier national team of radiation oncology experts, including Shen Wenjiang, Tenured Honorary Professor of the Radiation Oncology Department at Peking University Health Science Center, and Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, among over 50 authoritative specialists. The center also appointed Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, as its President, establishing a nationally leading radiation oncology discipline system.The center is equipped with internationally advanced technologies, including: Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity with HyperSight 4D imaging-guided linac, 3.0T High-Aperture MRI (the only one in Lanzhou urban area) for precise radiotherapy planning, GE 256-slice CT for high-resolution imaging. This integration of "heavy ions + photons + precision imaging"creates a multi-modal treatment system, ensuring high efficiency and accuracy in clinical care.

The conference marked Northwest China’s entry into the global forefront of oncology treatment, advancing precision radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and gynecologic oncology. It underscores the region’s commitment to the "Healthy China 2030" initiative, blending innovation, collaboration, and localization to elevate oncology care standards.
