Rooted in shared cultural heritage, the legacy of traditional Chinese medicine continues to flourish across the strait. On August 25, the 2026 Gansu‑Taiwan Traditional Chinese Medicine Exchange Delegation visited the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for an in‑depth inspection and exchange focused on integrated Chinese and Western cancer care and the innovative development of TCM — building a bridge of friendship and mutual learning between Gansu and Taiwan in the field of medicine.

The delegation brought together experts from TCM research institutions, integrated Chinese‑Western medicine practitioners, wellness industry professionals, and young medical representatives from Taiwan, representing a high‑level exchange team in the fields of cross‑strait TCM integration and collaborative cancer care.

The delegation toured the heavy ion treatment area, central control room, heavy ion treatment rooms, and other core functional areas. The campus's tour team provided a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the technical principles of the domestically produced carbon‑ion therapy system, clinical outcomes from thousands of domestic and international cases, and cutting‑edge research directions, allowing the delegation to gain an up‑close understanding of China's advanced tumor radiotherapy technology.

Following the tour, Su Anping, Vice President of the Lanzhou Campus, delivered a special lecture titled "Clinical Application of China's First Heavy Ion System." The lecture systematically covered the development history, unique technical advantages, core indications, clinical outcomes, and standardized clinical experience of the domestically produced heavy ion therapy system, comprehensively showcasing the robust capabilities and broad clinical value of China's independently developed heavy ion cancer treatment technology.

During the panel discussion, experts from both sides engaged in in‑depth exchanges on topics including the promotion of TCM appropriate technologies in oncology, integrated Chinese‑Western clinical standards, the development of cancer rehabilitation and wellness systems, and cross‑strait TCM academic innovation. The open dialogue and sharing of cutting‑edge experience sparked vibrant intellectual exchange. The delegation expressed high recognition for our hospital's innovative achievements and clinical outcomes in integrating TCM and Western medicine for cancer care, as well as its efforts to build specialized services.

Deeply rooted in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine, we are committed to empowering precision cancer care. As the birthplace of domestically produced heavy ion technology, our hospital adheres to the development philosophy of combining precision heavy ion therapy with TCM principles of strengthening the body's vital energy and reinforcing the root. Leveraging the heavy ion cancer treatment system with independent intellectual property rights, we take full advantage of the "Bragg peak" targeting capability of heavy ion beams to precisely eradicate tumor lesions while maximizing the protection of surrounding normal tissues.

At the same time, our TCM department has pioneered the exploration and establishment of a "TCM + heavy ion" whole‑life‑cycle cancer care model. Based on the constitutional characteristics of the local population in Northwest China, we integrate TCM syndrome‑based treatment throughout the entire cancer care continuum — from preoperative conditioning, treatment‑related toxicity reduction and efficacy enhancement, postoperative recovery, to advanced‑stage palliative care. This approach enables the deep integration of cutting‑edge radiotherapy technology with the distinctive advantages of TCM in the Gansu region, forming a collaborative diagnosis and treatment pathway tailored to local patients. It effectively improves patients' quality of life and prolongs survival, contributing to the development of a "Chinese solution" for cancer treatment. Several of our distinctive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques have filled regional gaps in the standardized integrated Chinese‑Western medicine management of cancer.

Rooted in the same cultural heritage and united in the spirit of Chinese medicine, this visit represented both a deep dialogue between medical cultures across the strait and a shared commitment to the inheritance and innovation of traditional Chinese medicine. Going forward, the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will take this exchange as an opportunity to continue preserving the essence of TCM, while upholding integrity and driving innovation in integrated Chinese‑Western diagnostic and treatment technologies. We will actively build long‑term bridges for cross‑strait medical exchange, draw on advanced clinical concepts and technical expertise, and continuously optimize whole‑life‑cycle integrated TCM‑Western cancer care services.
