Harnessing Social Oversight to Uphold Medical Integrity: Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital's Lanzhou Campus Convenes Conference on Medical Quality and Professional Ethics
To further strengthen the safeguards for medical quality and safety, enhance professional ethics, broaden channels for social oversight, and foster harmonious doctor-patient relationships, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital's Lanzhou Campus convened a conference on medical quality and professional ethics on August 21, appointing a new team of social supervisors. Representatives from Party and government agencies, enterprises, public institutions, state-owned enterprises, sub-district communities, and patient families gathered at the Lanzhou Branch, situated along the Yellow River, to discuss pathways for high-quality hospital development, explore new models for social supervision, and jointly safeguard public health rights.

The meeting was presided over by Qi Ying, Vice President of the Lanzhou Branch. She noted that since the launch of carbon-ion clinical therapy on November 15, 2024, the Lanzhou Campus has steadily advanced its mission of clinically translating domestically developed heavy-ion technology. Working in tandem with the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, it has formed a coordinated north-south layout, achieving a milestone leap for Gansu Province in high-end tumor radiotherapy. As a vital component of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, the Lanzhou Campus remains steadfast in upholding medical quality as its core priority. By deepening expertise in heavy-ion precision therapy, integrating the unique strengths of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and developing a distinctive "Gansu model" for cancer care, the hospital provides full-cycle health services to cancer patients. She emphasized that the hospital's achievements are attributable to the guidance of experts and leaders, as well as the unwavering support from society—a support that forms the very foundation for establishing this social supervision team.
The appointment ceremony served as the core agenda of the conference. Professor Wang Junjie, President of the Lanzhou Campus, presented letters of appointment to the supervisor representatives. The diverse group of supervisors—representing Party and government bodies, public institutions, large enterprises, sub-districts, communities, and patient families—ensures broad and objective oversight perspectives. Following the batch presentations, the supervisors took group photos on stage, marking the official commencement of a new chapter in the hospital's social supervision efforts.

President Wang Junjie extended his congratulations to all appointed supervisors. He stated that the Lanzhou Campus will fully leverage the external perspectives of these supervisors, hoping they will serve as the hospital's "supervisors, ambassadors, and think tank." He encouraged them to act as the "eyes and ears" for the hospital's development and build a "bridge of connection" between doctors and patients. By objectively relaying patient needs and accurately identifying service gaps, the supervisors will help propel the hospital toward its goal of becoming the most comprehensive national regional medical center for tumor radiotherapy in Western China.

Following the conference, President Wang delivered a special science lecture titled The "Rocket Force" Against Tumors: Radiation Therapy. He systematically elaborated on the technical advantages and clinical outcomes of heavy-ion therapy, laying a professional foundation for the supervisors to conduct precise and effective oversight.
As the core of the hospital's "One Body, Two Wings" development strategy, the Lanzhou Branch remains true to its founding mission of serving the people through healthcare. Relying on the world's only dual-ion therapy system, the hospital has eliminated the need for local patients to seek treatment outside the province, significantly improving outcomes for refractory tumors such as gliomas and pancreatic cancer, while fully demonstrating the strength of China's independent innovation in high-end medical equipment. Aligning with the province's nuclear industry development strategy, the hospital continues to deepen the collaborative "Lanzhou-Wuwei Dual-Center" model. To date, it has completed over 3,000 heavy-ion clinical treatments, serving patients nationwide and from multiple countries, establishing itself as a key ambassador for Chinese heavy-ion technology on the global stage. Concurrently, the hospital is strengthening its nuclear medicine specialty to build a comprehensive nuclear diagnosis and treatment system that integrates heavy-ion precision radiotherapy with nuclear medicine targeted therapy, continuously empowering the high-quality development of oncology care in Northwest China with cutting-edge nuclear technology.

After the meeting, the supervisors toured the hospital's core clinical areas and the Heavy Ion Treatment Center. The Lanzhou Branch fully shares the eight "first-in-the-world and nation" technological achievements of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. Its precise "targeted blasting" treatment advantages and high-quality medical environment received unanimous recognition from the supervisors.

Moving forward, the Lanzhou Campus will use this conference as a catalyst to fully integrate social supervision into its daily management. Adhering to a problem-oriented approach, the hospital will focus on medical quality and professional ethics, extensively gather public feedback, and proactively incorporate suggestions from all sectors to continuously optimize the patient experience. Simultaneously, the hospital will bolster its sci-tech innovation platforms, actively deploy cutting-edge cancer diagnosis and treatment technologies, and continuously refine its "Heavy Ion + TCM" Gansu-characteristic cancer care model. It is committed to building a high-quality cancer treatment institution that earns public trust and societal recognition, thereby contributing the "Wuwei Tumor Hospital strength" to the Healthy China initiative and the high-quality development of Gansu's healthcare sector.
