Professor Yang Shuanying Visits Wuwei Cancer Hospital to Advance Lung Cancer Care

On August 13, Professor Yang Shuanying of The Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University (Xibei Hospital) visited the main campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital at the invitation of the hospital, where he conducted ward rounds, delivered an academic lecture, and engaged in scholarly exchange with the Second Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Professor Yang has long been devoted to research and clinical promotion of individualized precision therapy for lung cancer and respiratory interventional technology. His academic focus aligns closely with the development direction of our Second Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. During the exchange, Professor Yang and the department's medical team traced the evolution of lung cancer diagnostics—from the limitations of conventional imaging and cytology to the ways emerging tools such as genetic testing, liquid biopsy, and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) enable earlier detection and molecular subtyping. The discussion explored in depth how this diagnostic shift is reshaping therapeutic decision-making.

In the physicians' office, imaging films of several challenging cases were laid out in sequence. Professor Yang and our respiratory team sat together and reviewed each frame, analyzing the trajectory of disease progression through subtle changes in lesion morphology. He then proceeded to the wards to conduct detailed patient interviews and physical examinations. At the bedside, Professor Yang candidly shared similar cases of failure he had encountered during consultations at other hospitals—from misjudged treatment strategies to delayed timing of interventional procedures—systematically reviewing each lesson learned, and offering original diagnostic and therapeutic insights tailored to the patient's actual condition.

Following the ward rounds, Professor Yang delivered a lecture entitled Standardized Comprehensive Management of Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). He opened with the precise timing of concurrent radiochemotherapy in limited-stage disease, progressed to the selection strategy of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy in extensive-stage disease, and concluded with individualized approaches to special subtypes such as transformed small cell lung cancer. Grounded in the latest clinical research data and guideline recommendations, the lecture unfolded with clarity and logical progression, presenting a well-defined standardized pathway for the full-cycle management of small cell lung cancer to the department team.

The Second Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a provincial key discipline and a National PCCM-certified tertiary hospital. It also serves as the Early Diagnosis and Treatment Center of the China Lung Cancer Consortium. The department commands advanced technologies including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), rigid bronchoscopy, medical thoracoscopy, CT-guided needle biopsy, radiofrequency ablation, seed implantation, and AI-based pulmonary nodule analysis, placing its clinical capability at the forefront of the province. Professor Yang's visit vividly embodies our hospital's mission of "converging cutting-edge technologies from around the world to benefit cancer patients everywhere." Moving forward, our Respiratory Department will continue to leverage top-tier national resources, deepen precision medicine and multidisciplinary collaboration, and strive to provide the people of the Hexi region with higher-quality respiratory disease diagnosis and treatment services.
