On August 12, participants of the Belt and Road International Training Program on Emergency Medical Rescue and Supply Chain Management visited the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital for an on‑site study tour, conducting an in‑depth review of the hospital's operational and management model for specialized oncology care and the clinical application outcomes of domestically produced heavy ion radiotherapy. The program was organized by the National Center for Emergency Medical Research and brought together professionals in healthcare management and emergency response from countries along the Belt and Road. The visit aimed to establish a platform for cross‑border emergency medical exchange and to share China's mature experience in oncology emergency care, high‑end radiotherapy equipment operation and maintenance, and standardized management of medical supplies.

The study tour participants visited the campus's heavy ion treatment area, central control room, heavy ion treatment room, and other core functional zones. The campus's professional tour team provided a comprehensive and systematic introduction to the core technical principles of the domestically produced carbon‑ion therapy system, clinical data from thousands of treated cases, and cutting‑edge research directions. On site, all participants expressed high recognition for China's independently developed heavy ion radiotherapy system — a "great national instrument" — and the standardized emergency management system of the specialized oncology hospital. This integrated approach, combining innovation with practical application in cancer care and emergency preparedness, addresses the gap between high‑end radiotherapy and major disease emergency response, forming a replicable and scalable "Chinese practice" for specialized oncology emergency care. It provides strong momentum for the dissemination and adoption of heavy ion radiotherapy technology and standardized emergency supply management models to countries along the Silk Road.

As a key clinical base for domestically produced heavy ion cancer therapy, the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center) leverages heavy ion cancer treatment equipment with independent intellectual property rights. Utilizing the physical properties of the heavy ion Bragg peak, it achieves precise targeted treatment of tumor lesions — effectively destroying cancer cells while maximizing protection of surrounding normal tissues. This approach offers notable advantages, including fewer side effects and a shorter treatment course. With a mature clinical system and comprehensive emergency support infrastructure, the Lanzhou Campus has earned broad recognition both domestically and internationally for its solid clinical outcomes and standardized management systems.

To meet the needs of international medical exchanges, the Lanzhou Campus has established a full‑process international reception and science‑based presentation service system, equipped with multilingual informational materials and standardized visitor pathways. This enables the complete transfer of practical experience in oncology facility operations, clinical heavy ion application, and emergency supply management to overseas healthcare professionals. At the same time, the hospital regularly hosts academic exchange platforms that bridge domestic and international expertise, continuously bringing in leading oncology, radiotherapy, and emergency medicine experts for on‑site clinical guidance and collaborative research. This provides a solid talent and technical foundation for the ongoing advancement of heavy ion technology and the refinement of emergency medical systems.

This on‑site visit by the Belt and Road study program focused on in‑depth exchanges on key topics including emergency operation and maintenance of high‑end radiotherapy equipment, coordinated emergency supply management in specialized oncology hospitals, and cross‑border sharing of emergency medical technologies. It marks an important milestone in our hospital's transition from an "inbound window" for international patients to an "outbound platform" for emergency medical management experience, heavy ion clinical technology, and standardized supply control protocols. This cross‑border exchange is not only a vivid example of Belt and Road health cooperation being implemented in Gansu, but will also continue to promote the global dissemination of China's emergency cancer care systems and technical standards for domestically produced high‑end medical equipment along the Silk Road.

Guided by the mission of "gathering world‑leading technologies to benefit cancer patients everywhere," the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will take this national‑level international study tour as an opportunity to continue deepening exchanges and mutual learning with healthcare partners in Belt and Road countries. It will promote the deep integration of domestically produced heavy ion technology and oncology emergency management standards with international norms, steadily advancing toward its vision of "becoming a destination for cancer patients worldwide and a core hub for Belt and Road emergency medical exchange." In doing so, it aims to extend the benefits of China's precision cancer therapy and standardized emergency medical systems to communities across the region.
