The 2026 Advanced Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Skills Training Program, organized by the Wuwei Quality Control Center for Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery, was successfully held

On August 7, the "Advanced Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Skills Training Program" — hosted by the Wuwei Quality Control Center for Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery — took place at the Heavy Ion Skills Training Center. The program was designed to elevate the standards of minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment in laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery across the region, steering the specialty toward standardized, consistent, and high-quality development.

The opening ceremony was presided over and addressed by Nie Peng, Vice President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital and Director of the Wuwei Quality Control Center for Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery. All participants gathered for a group photo following the opening.

The first session featured academic lectures, chaired by Tao Jichun, Deputy Director of the Abdominal Surgery Department at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. Professor Wang Jihong, Director of the Gastric Surgery Department, delivered a systematic presentation on Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Anastomosis Techniques, outlining key technical points and procedural standards. Professor Wang Yongjin, Deputy Director of Gastric Surgery and Secretary of the Wuwei Quality Control Center, shared clinical insights on Dual-Endoscope Combined Radical Resection for Early Gastric Cancer, highlighting the advantages of this combined approach. Engineer Li Ruifeng​ provided a detailed briefing on the practical exercises, laying a solid foundation for the hands-on training that followed. The lectures struck a strong balance between cutting-edge clinical theory and practical guidance, generating active discussion and a vibrant academic atmosphere.

Professor Wang Yongjin, Deputy Director of the Gastric Surgery Department at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital and Secretary of the Wuwei Quality Control Center for Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery, delivered a lecture titled "Dual-Endoscope Combined Radical Resection for Early Gastric Cancer."

Engineer Li Ruifeng, Training Specialist at Johnson & Johnson, delivered a lecture titled "Operational Requirements for Practical Exercises."

The second session was a hands-on skills workshop, chaired by Wang Yongjin, Secretary of the Quality Control Center. Participants engaged in two stages of simulated practice: first using 3D ex vivo gastrointestinal specimens for foundational exercises, then advancing to perfused organ specimens for higher-level skill training. These high-fidelity simulations enabled participants to internalize core operative techniques and tangibly strengthen their clinical competence.

A closing ceremony capped off the program, where Wang Yongjin​ presented certificates of completion to all participants. He encouraged them to treat this training as a springboard for continuous refinement of their minimally invasive surgical skills and to contribute meaningfully to the health and well-being of gastrointestinal patients in the region.

As the host venue, the Heavy Ion Skills Training Center leverages the world's only heavy ion therapy system platform to deliver a comprehensive training ecosystem integrating research, education, and clinical practice. As of July 2026, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has treated over 3,000 oncology patients. Moving forward, the Wuwei Quality Control Center for Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery will continue to harness this platform to organize regular, high-caliber training programs — driving the broader adoption and advancement of laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgical techniques and injecting fresh momentum into the high-quality development of regional healthcare.
