Good News: Our Geriatrics Department Recognized as a Provincial-Level Standardized Geriatrics Department

Recently, the Gansu Provincial Health Commission officially announced the evaluation results. Our Geriatrics Department successfully passed the on-site assessment based on its solid disciplinary foundation, standardized construction criteria, and high-quality medical services, earning the designation of a "provincial-level standardized geriatrics department construction qualified unit." This provincial honor not only fully affirms the department's efforts in standardized development but also marks a new phase of standardized and refined advancement for our hospital in addressing population aging and enhancing comprehensive geriatric health service capacity. The evaluation is part of a broader provincial initiative to improve geriatric care. According to a notice from the Gansu Provincial Health Commission, the goal is for over 75% of secondary and above general hospitals to have geriatrics departments that meet these standards by the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. A total of 46 institutions, including our hospital's Geriatrics Department, were identified as qualified in 2024, with similar recognitions continuing into 2025. Our department had already been designated as a "municipal center" of the Cardiomyopathy Specialty Alliance by the National Cardiovascular Center in March 2023, and as the lead hospital for the Hypertension Center in 2025. Additionally, it is the only public hospital hospice care center in Wuwei. These achievements reflect the department's ongoing commitment to high-quality, standardized care for the aging population.

Our Geriatrics Department, closely aligned with the characteristic of multimorbidity and complexity in elderly patients, has established a multidisciplinary, one‑stop collaborative diagnostic and treatment model. Experts from geriatrics, cardiology, neurology, oncology, nutrition, and rehabilitation work together to develop individualized, comprehensive care plans for each patient, effectively achieving "integrated management of multiple conditions" and sparing patients the burden of visiting multiple departments. At the same time, the department fully implements comprehensive geriatric assessment, providing a precise "profile" of each patient across dimensions including disease, functional status, psychological well‑being, and social support. Routine screening and intervention are conducted for geriatric syndromes such as frailty, falls, and malnutrition, while long‑term standardized management is provided for chronic diseases in the elderly.

Leveraging our hospital's strong oncology platform and the advantages of heavy ion technology, the Geriatrics Department provides comprehensive whole‑course care for elderly patients with cancer and comorbid conditions. For complex cases involving cancer combined with multiple chronic diseases, we offer integrated, continuous management. As a public medical institution providing hospice care in Wuwei and the host unit of the Wuwei Hospice Care Quality Control Center, the department ensures that disease treatment is consistently accompanied by respect for the patient's dignity throughout their journey. The hospital has also fully optimized its care processes based on the concept of age‑friendliness, offering one‑stop services including guided navigation and accompaniment for examinations — delivering compassionate, human‑centered care in every detail.

Receiving the designation as a qualified unit for provincial‑level standardized construction is both an honor and a responsibility — and a continued motivation to improve. Looking ahead, our Geriatrics Department will focus on three key priorities: enhancing clinical capabilities, expanding service reach, and strengthening regional leadership. We will strengthen our core competencies in geriatric emergency and critical care and integrated multimorbidity management, fully exercise our role as the Wuwei Hospice Care Quality Control Center, and promote the extension of high‑quality geriatric services to communities and families. Through specialized expertise and concrete action, we are committed to building a solid defense for the health of the aging population in the region.
