Pooling Premier Medical Resources from Beijing and Gansu to Safeguard Urological Health

— Professor Ma Lulin of Peking University Third Hospital Begins Consultation at Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital

Amid the warmth of a midsummer Lanzhou, a long-awaited medical exchange spanning thousands of miles has come to fruition. Professor Ma Lulin, Vice President of the Haidian Campus of Peking University Third Hospital and a leading authority in urology, has arrived at the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Tumor Hospital. He will undertake regular expert consultations, ward rounds with teaching sessions, and multidisciplinary consultations for complex cases, bringing top-tier minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for urological tumors directly to patients in Northwest China.

Four Decades of Excellence in Urology

Specializing in Complex Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment

As a Grade 2 Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Peking University, Professor Ma has dedicated nearly forty years to clinical practice, research, and education in urology. He holds key academic positions, including Standing Committee Member of the Urology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Head of its Kidney Transplantation Group, and has received prestigious awards such as the Wu Jieping Urology Medical Award and the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology Award. Professor Ma specializes in minimally invasive urological oncology and kidney transplantation. He is nationally renowned for his expertise in high-difficulty procedures including robotic/laparoscopic radical resection of renal cell carcinoma with vena cava tumor thrombus, giant adrenal tumor excision, nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, and orthotopic bladder reconstruction. With over 30 SCI papers and more than 300 articles in core journals, he is a benchmark expert in the diagnosis and treatment of renal cancer tumor thrombus and minimally invasive urological oncology in China.

Now, by traveling to Lanzhou for regular consultations and surgical guidance, he is implementing cutting-edge technologies and advanced concepts in the Northwest region, establishing a direct channel for patients in Gansu and the Hexi Corridor to access care from a national-level expert.

Compassionate Consultations Reflecting Clinical Benevolence

During each consultation session, Professor Ma arrives early to meticulously review the medical records of scheduled patients. He engages with every patient in a gentle tone, listening attentively before conducting a comprehensive analysis of their condition, alleviating their fears and anxieties regarding urological tumors.

For an elderly patient with prostate cancer, he provided a detailed explanation of tumor staging and the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, carefully weighing treatment options against the patient’s overall health. To a middle-aged patient with kidney cancer concerned about surgical trauma and postoperative quality of life, he clearly explained the technical features of laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery and systematically addressed questions regarding recovery and follow-up. Every note on his desk—detailing each patient’s condition, treatment recommendations, and follow-up plans—reflects his empathy and rigorous professionalism.

Mentorship to Strengthen Regional Urological Talent

Beyond direct patient care, Professor Ma prioritizes nurturing local talent, focusing on developing young urologists at the Lanzhou campus. He conducts specialized lectures based on complex clinical cases and global frontiers in minimally invasive technology, offering in-depth teaching on challenges in urological tumor surgery, perioperative management, and carbon-ion therapy combined with comprehensive treatment. He illustrates diagnostic and therapeutic approaches through extensive case studies from his own practice.

Beijing-Gansu Collaboration Building a Health Shield for the Northwest

Professor Ma has maintained a regular commute between Beijing and Lanzhou, dedicating himself to clinical work, teaching, and discipline development in the "Golden City." His efforts have continuously empowered the urology department, helping establish an integrated system encompassing early screening, precise diagnosis, minimally invasive surgery, and carbon-ion precision radiotherapy for urological tumors. This has filled a gap in comprehensive one-stop diagnosis and treatment for complex urological tumors in the Northwest, allowing local patients to access top-tier national expertise without traveling to Beijing.

Looking ahead, the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will deepen its collaboration with Professor Ma’s team, sustaining regular expert consultations, surgical demonstrations, academic seminars, and talent cultivation. By continuing to introduce premier medical professionals and advanced technologies, the hospital is committed to safeguarding the urological health of the people in Gansu with superb skill and compassionate service, striving to build a modern oncology hub that serves the Hexi region and radiates throughout Northwest China.
