Gansu Provincial Infectious Disease Quality Control Center – Wuwei‑Jinchang Regional Training Session Held at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital

On July 25, the Gansu Provincial Infectious Disease Quality Control Center – Wuwei‑Jinchang Station Specialized Training Session was held at the Central Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. This training served both as a concentrated academic study on standardized diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases across the province, and as a concrete demonstration of our hospital's commitment to its role as a regional medical center — fulfilling its social responsibility and leveraging its radiation and leading capacity.

The training was led by Professor Mao Xiaorong, Director of the Gansu Provincial Infectious Disease Quality Control Center, with course content tailored by an expert team from The First Hospital of Lanzhou University, including Yuan Yuan, Mao Yongwu, and Jiang Ni. The program focused on interpreting the newly revised Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, providing an overview of the overall quality of infectious disease care across the province, and addressing clinical practice challenges through Q&A and solution‑sharing sessions. A large number of healthcare professionals from Wuwei and Jinchang attended the training.

In recent years, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has consistently integrated infectious disease prevention and control with the development of oncology specialties, advancing both in a coordinated manner. Leveraging the provincial quality control collaboration system and working with medical institutions at all levels across the two cities, the hospital has used standardized quality control as a key driver to promote the homogenized development of infectious disease diagnosis and treatment capabilities in both regions. This training session further reaffirms our hospital's pivotal role in the regional medical quality control system.

As the only hospital in the world operating two domestically produced heavy ion therapy systems, we predominantly treat patients with complex and refractory tumors. These patients often have prolonged treatment courses and unique immunological profiles, placing higher demands on refined infection management. The hospital has integrated the precision advantages of heavy ion therapy with comprehensive infection control throughout the care pathway — conducting thorough infection risk screening before treatment, dynamically monitoring immune parameters during treatment, and maintaining long‑term follow‑up after treatment. This approach ensures that while tumor lesions are precisely eliminated, infection safety is rigorously safeguarded. Compared with conventional radiotherapy and chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy is associated with lower toxicity and less immunosuppression, thereby reducing the baseline risk of infection. This unique integrated "heavy ion + infection prevention" model has become a cornerstone of our hospital's care for patients with complex and critical conditions.
