National Expert Daily Consultations: Professor Fan Ruitai, a Leading Authority, Deepens Engagement at Our Hospital to Advance Cancer Care
On June 9, Professor Fan Ruitai – a standing committee member of the Chinese Society of Radiation Oncology and former chair of the fifth Radiation Oncology Branch of the Henan Medical Association – officially joined the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital on a regular, on‑site basis. With his extensive clinical experience and strategic vision for discipline development, Professor Fan brings critical momentum to the hospital's efforts to elevate its radiotherapy services and achieve a significant leap in clinical care.

Professor Fan Ruitai holds the titles of Second‑Level Professor, Chief Physician, and Doctoral Supervisor, backed by an exceptional academic and clinical track record. He serves as the academic leader for both the Ministry of Health's key clinical specialty in oncology and Henan Province's key discipline in oncology – a rare "double" leadership role. As a standing committee member of the Chinese Society of Radiation Oncology, he helps guide the direction of radiotherapy technology at the national level. From designing individualized radiotherapy plans to conducting precision radiotherapy research on common cancers such as lung and breast cancer, Professor Fan understands both frontline clinical needs and the strategic logic of discipline development. This well‑rounded expertise enables him to precisely address the needs of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, serving as a bridge between advanced experience and local practice.
During his regular on‑site tenure, Professor Fan Ruitai has been deeply involved in both clinical care and education at the center – covering outpatient consultations, ward rounds, and teaching. He works side‑by‑side with the center's medical and nursing teams, providing targeted guidance on complex cancer cases. He carefully reviews each patient’s imaging, analyzes disease progression, and works with the team to dynamically refine treatment strategies. While ensuring the precision of heavy ion radiotherapy, he consistently emphasizes patient tolerance and delivers hands‑on, immersive training that simultaneously enhances both the clinical reasoning and practical skills of the center’s staff. As a result, every cancer patient treated at the center can now receive high‑quality radiotherapy services – comparable to international standards – without having to leave their home region.

In recent years, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has achieved significant results in advancing both the Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and its network of 50 expert workstations. As the only hospital in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has remained dedicated to the ongoing development and innovation of cancer treatment technologies. The Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital serves as the second clinical heavy ion center in China operating with domestically developed intellectual property; the system became clinically operational at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the hospital has completed over 600 photon and heavy ion procedures for patients with a range of diseases, including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.
Professor Fan Ruitai’s regular on‑site presence at the hospital embodies the commitment of the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to its guiding mission: “gathering world‑leading technologies to benefit cancer patients everywhere.” With an open and inclusive approach, the hospital not only actively brings in internationally advanced heavy ion therapy technologies and builds bridges for cross‑border academic exchange — engaging in deep technical dialogue and experience‑sharing with top experts from Japan, Germany, and other countries — but also, through a pragmatic and dedicated spirit, brings in leading domestic clinical experts. Through regular ward round guidance and personalized outpatient care, the hospital is advancing clinical practice toward greater standardization and improving care quality. By continually strengthening discipline development from within, the hospital strives to bring new hope to cancer patients.

By bringing together leading medical expertise from both China and abroad, the hospital will further enhance its core diagnostic and treatment capabilities and the quality of its services, ensuring that advanced heavy ion therapy reaches more cancer patients. In doing so, it will provide a strong driving force for the development of a Healthy Northwest China.
