Jordanian Patient Discharged – Wuwei Heavy Ion Center: A Global Cancer Care Destination

On May 19, the warm early summer sun shone over the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. Dina (pseudonym), a patient from Jordan, accompanied by her husband, solemnly struck the bronze gong symbolizing a milestone in her recovery. After 38 days and nights of cross-border treatment, this critically ill cancer patient, who had traveled over 6,000 kilometers seeking medical care, achieved effective disease control and was successfully discharged. This moment marked not only a rebirth for one family but also a vivid demonstration of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center's commitment to its vision of "becoming a destination for cancer patients worldwide to overcome the disease," using professional expertise and humanistic care to protect lives.

Dina, 55 years old, had a history of breast cancer for over a decade, with her condition progressing continuously after surgery. By March 2026, metastases had appeared in her liver, both lungs, bones, and multiple other sites. Local medical options were unable to halt the deterioration of her condition. At this critical juncture, when conventional treatment had reached an impasse, Dina and her husband, carrying hope, traveled across mountains and seas to Wuwei, China. Upon admission, examination revealed dural thickening accompanied by mass formation, severe brain tissue compression, and midline shift. She was in a high-risk state of cerebral herniation, with her life hanging in the balance.

Confronted with this complex, cross‑border, challenging case, the center promptly initiated a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach. The expert team conducted rigorous assessments and developed an integrated plan that simultaneously advanced urgent symptomatic and supportive treatments—such as reducing intracranial pressure and providing neurotrophic support—alongside preparations for carbon ion radiotherapy. On the third day after admission, Dina suddenly developed altered consciousness and abnormal vital signs. The medical and nursing team responded rapidly, carrying out standardized emergency interventions that successfully stabilized her condition.

During the treatment preparation, which was a race against time, the medical physics team repeatedly simulated and ultimately determined an individualized radiotherapy regimen of 72 Gy(RBE) delivered in 12 fractions, striving to precisely target the tumor while minimizing risks such as cerebral hemorrhage. Throughout the treatment course, the patient experienced complications including severe oral mucosal ulcers, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure, with her white blood cell and platelet counts dropping to critical levels. Leveraging the multidisciplinary collaborative treatment system, the cardiology, hematology, and radiotherapy departments worked seamlessly together, dynamically adjusting medication regimens. Meanwhile, the nursing team provided 24‑hour meticulous care, warming the heart of this international patient with their attentive dedication.

After more than thirty days of all‑out treatment, follow‑up results on May 9 showed that Dina’s intracranial lesions had reduced in size compared to previous imaging, cerebral edema had significantly subsided, and the midline brain structures had essentially returned to normal position. Her critical condition had been fundamentally controlled. On the day of discharge, a clear, resonant strike of the gong provided a warm epilogue to this cross‑border trust in life.

No borders across mountains and seas; no bounds to the healer's mission. Dina's recovery and discharge are a microcosm of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center's commitment to serving the world from its base along the Silk Road. In the future, the center will continue to deepen the field of precision cancer diagnosis and treatment, continuously improve the whole‑life‑cycle health service system, and welcome more international patients with even more advanced technology and higher quality care, allowing the name "China Heavy Ion" to continuously convey the power of life on the global stage.
