On the morning of April 25th, a delegation of professors from the Department of Thoracic Oncology of Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, visited the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to conduct an onsite inspection and research activity. The delegation focused on the clinical application of precision radiotherapy for thoracic tumors, gaining in-depth insight into the groundbreaking achievements of domestic heavy ion technology in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic tumors and various other cancers. Key exchanges centered on the advanced experience of the heavy ion precision radiotherapy technology system, standardized diagnosis and treatment procedures, specialized thoracic oncology care, and research translation. The two sides jointly explored new pathways for the collaborative development of the radiation oncology discipline.

During the visit, the delegation toured the sand table model room, the core treatment area, the smart hospital command center, and the central control room. With detailed explanations and guidance from the staff, the delegation members observed the operation model of the heavy ion therapy system, the operating status of the core equipment, and the high-end tumor diagnosis and treatment support facilities. They gained a comprehensive understanding of the overall planning and layout of the "China Heavy Ion Healthcare Town" and deeply studied the practical achievements of the "heavy ion therapy combined with whole-life-cycle physical and mental health management model". The two sides conducted in-depth and practical exchanges on topics such as the precise application of heavy ion radiotherapy for thoracic tumor indications, the multidisciplinary team (MDT) diagnostic and treatment model, standardized whole-process patient management, and specialized talent training. They personally witnessed the innovative practice and remarkable outcomes achieved through the deep integration of domestically produced cutting-edge radiotherapy equipment with clinical tumor diagnosis and treatment.

As the birthplace of domestically produced heavy ion technology and a national benchmark for clinical heavy ion application, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is widely recognized by the industry as the "Jinggangshan" of ion radiotherapy. Leveraging strong scientific research capabilities and rich clinical experience, the center has successfully overcome multiple core technical barriers in heavy ion therapy and independently developed nine globally leading heavy ion treatment technologies, driving the advancement of the domestic heavy ion medical field. As the first medical institution in China to operate two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, the center has accumulated mature and valuable practical experience in the concurrent clinical application of dual systems. It has achieved breakthrough progress in multiple areas, including thoracic tumors, single-fraction one-day regimens, precise radiotherapy under ventilator management, and bladder capacity-guided precision radiotherapy for bladder cancer. In particular, the center has established unique advantages in precision heavy ion radiotherapy for thoracic tumors. The center's innovative techniques, such as "single-session precision radiotherapy with organ-tumor spacer implantation" and "dual-Bragg peak lattice radiotherapy," have successfully treated numerous challenging and complex tumors, achieving dynamic precision throughout tumor radiotherapy while maximizing the protection of normal tissues and organs.

In addition, the center's original "heavy ion therapy combined with whole-life-cycle physical and mental health management model" deeply integrates internationally cutting-edge radiotherapy technology with comprehensive, long-term humanistic care, providing tumor patients with integrated, all-around health support covering diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation, and physical and mental well-being. To date, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has completed treatment for over 2,800 tumor patients, covering all provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China. Moreover, the center has attracted international patients from countries such as Australia, Belgium, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, demonstrating the global recognition and clinical acceptance of domestically produced heavy ion technology.

At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation of professors from the Department of Thoracic Oncology, Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, highly praised and fully recognized the internationally leading radiotherapy equipment, scientifically standardized tumor diagnosis and treatment system, warm and comfortable medical environment, and a series of breakthrough achievements in the field of heavy ion medicine—particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic tumors—at the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. Both parties reached a consensus on cooperation, agreeing to take this visit as an opportunity to further deepen exchanges and collaboration in areas such as precision radiotherapy technology research for thoracic tumors, joint scientific research projects, sharing of clinical diagnosis and treatment experience, and specialized talent training.
