Radioactive nuclide application therapy has been used clinically for over 40 years, offering advantages such as simplicity, non-invasiveness, painlessness, and proven efficacy. In addition to the two common skin conditions mentioned, radioactive nuclide application therapy can also be used to treat neurodermatitis, localized chronic eczema, localized psoriasis, common warts, basal cell papillomas, epidermal growths, and other diseases.

How the Department of Nuclear Medicine Uses the 90Sr Applicator for Treatment

Upon arrival at the Department of Nuclear Medicine, the doctor will assess the location and thickness of the scar, calculate the absorbed dose based on the scar area, and then create an application model according to the shape of the lesion. Scar treatment typically requires 3 to 4 courses, with each 90Sr treatment course spaced at least 2 months apart.

Post-90Sr Application Therapy Precautions

During treatment, avoid getting the application area wet and reduce consumption of spicy and irritating foods, especially if they cause itching or stinging. Minimize friction on the affected area and keep the local skin clean and dry.  

After treatment, avoid hot water washing, scratching, or damaging the lesion site. Maintain lesion hygiene to prevent infection.  

Post-treatment reactions can vary widely, and any reaction is possible, including redness, swelling, pain, itching, blisters, exudation, ulceration, scabbing, shedding, and flattening or whitening of the scar. Some patients may experience only one or two of these reactions, while others may experience them all. Patients should follow their doctor's guidance for symptomatic treatment.  

Therapeutic effects usually appear 2-3 weeks after treatment, mainly manifesting as changes in local skin color, peeling, scabbing, and shedding. Some may experience itching; avoid scratching and consider local cold compresses or the application of moisturizing cream or mentholatum. Prolonged use of steroid-based anti-itch ointments should be avoided to prevent pigmentation. For skin ulceration, sulfadiazine silver ointment can be applied for anti-inflammatory and astringent purposes.
