PET-CT is a diagnostic technology that emerged in the early 21st century. Its widespread adoption within just a few decades is primarily due to advantages that ordinary diagnostic equipment like CT and MRI cannot match. Summarized below are eight major advantages of PET-CT examination:
I. The Most Powerful Cancer Prevention Equipment of the 21st Century
By organically combining the lesion-detecting capabilities of PET with the anatomical structural imaging of CT, the advantages of both complement each other. Compared to ordinary imaging examinations like CT and MRI, PET-CT can detect abnormal lesions in the body half a year earlier, achieving a 1+1>2 effect.
II. Whole-Body Examination with a Single Positioning
A single positioning acquires information of the whole body, including transverse, sagittal, and coronal plane images, allowing direct visualization of the affected areas and extent of disease involvement throughout the body. This saves a significant amount of time and money compared to other imaging methods that often require examining body parts one by one.
III. High Sensitivity for Various Tumors
PET-CT can accurately detect the location of lesions in the early stages of cancer when the morphological structure of the affected area is not yet abnormal but cellular molecular changes have already occurred. It can obtain three-dimensional images, enabling early diagnosis, which is incomparable to other imaging examinations.
IV. Superb Specificity for Certain Tumors
When MRI or CT examinations detect a tumor in an organ, it is often difficult to determine whether it is benign or malignant, especially in the early stages of the lesion. PET-CT examination can provide a definitive diagnosis based on the characteristic high metabolic activity of malignant tumors.

The PET-CT Center at Gansu Wuwei Medical Science Academy Cancer Hospital has introduced the American GE Discovery 710 Clarity super iterative PET-CT, which is the most advanced 256-ring LBS crystal PET/128-slice spiral CT in China. This equipment is the fourth PET-CT unit in Gansu Province and the only one in prefectural-level city hospitals across the province. It is a super iterative device launched by GE (USA) that leads the current world trend, offering higher sensitivity and specificity compared to ordinary PET/CT. Its unique high spatial resolution of 1.8mm can greatly enhance the detection capability for minute lesions, while simultaneously significantly reducing the scan time for whole-body examinations, lowering the radiation dose for the examinee, and yielding ideal diagnostic results. It is hailed as the crown jewel of modern high-tech medicine. The center boasts first-class radiopharmaceutical laboratories and is equipped with a medical cyclotron system capable of producing various specialized tracers (such as 11C, 13N, 18F) required for diagnosing different diseases. The purity of the produced pharmaceuticals exceeds national standards, reaching world-class levels, ensuring precise diagnosis for the vast number of patients. Our hospital's PET-CT Center has thus become the only one in Gansu Province that simultaneously conducts both 11C and 18F imaging.
